Sins races

Hey all, I'm new and just a bit confused and was wondering - I'll play a two player game. In that game, will be my enemy, pirates, and then theres always like a 3rd faction that seems to be one of the races(TEC I think?), but theyre not my enemy, and not pirates .. who are they and what are they doing in a 2-player game? The manual is thin, and there's barely any story to go with this game, so I was just wondering. Any help is appreciated.

I would like some more information, to better answer your question.

Which side where you playing(TEC, Advent, or Vasari)
Which side was your enemy playing(TEC, Advent, or Vasari)

my answer with out that information.

There are about 4 factions when you start a 2 player game.

1. Your faction(TEC, Advent, or Vasari)
2. Your enemy's faction (TEC, Advent, or Vasari)
3. Pirates; that use TEC like ships, and one that the TEC do not use.
4. And a faction of ships, that act like the creeps, from warcraft 3. These guys are there, so that you there is not a colony frigate rush to get all the planets. You have to work, to get those planets. There is a way to produce creeps, for the TEC faction(The creeps, are called rebels) thougth a upgrade, called Insurgency

They're planetary garrisons. Each colonizable world already has a native population that must be suppressed before you can move in. They've bought old ships from the traders for defense.

Thanks for the answers guys.

I do have a few more questions. When I explore a planet, I sometimes find things, but they're not artifacts, and I can't seem to find them anywhere in the interface. Any idea what they are?

and ...

How is it that you can pay a much bigger bounty than your opponent, but the pirates will still come after you even though the sword is next to your opponent's name and they're listed as the wanted faction?

Thanks for any help ...

They're just general bonuses. The difference between them and the artifacts is that artifacts give a bonus to every ship and planet, but planetary bonuses only affect stuff in the gravity well. To see what the bonus is if you find one, mouse-over your planet and it'll tell you on the infocard.

The bounty amount is only factored in by pirates just before the announcement that their attack fleet has materialized (e.g. Advent: "pirate raiders have departed!"). So you get your first warning, them a minute or so to get into a bidding war if you want to, and then the departure announcement means they've made their decision. The pirates pick and lock in their target (which is the one with the highest bounty against it, or random if not), select a target player's planet which is close to their base, and they ONLY go there until they're either wiped out or they destroy everything they can in that gravity well.

Sometimes you see a couple swords on the pirate menu - this is because there are two pirate bases or an older fleet has not been completely wiped out while a newer fleet is just leaving.
