New player - Advice on how to manage ships

Greetings everyone.  I just started playing GCII and love it!.  The game is pretty intuitive.. except one thing I haven't figured out.  I have ships scattered everywhere.  How can I cycle through the list of ships I have and go to their point on the map to give them instructions?

I am also used to being alerted (in other similar games) when foreign ships enter within my planet or ships scanning range.  I've noticed that I have to manually look for my ships each turn in order to see if anyone has popped up.  Other than that, it's an awesome game!!

Thanks,

There is a planet/ship list that is opened via the leftmost button at the bottom of the screen.

You can zoom out to the tactical display to quickly identify intruders.

I saw the planet/ship list and it does bring up the ships...but I can't click on the ship and be brought to where it is on the map.. Perhaps I should reread the PDF..

I'm not sure what you mean when you say zoom out.. sorry for being a dunderhead.

If while playing you zoom out (scroll wheel on your mouse) far enough, the beautiful 3D graphics will change to 2D icons. This is your tactical display. You can much more easily identify offending ships (as well as their type) by the icons and the color which they have. This is also a great way to find your ships.

You can press the [tab] key or press the find button in the bottom right of the game window to locate ships that still have movement points left.

It seems like I remember there being a way to move to the ship by clicking on it. Did you try right clicking? I don't use the list much for ships since I tend to have a good memory in these sorts of games. That comes from playing them when you should be doing other things.

Do you know you can band ships into fleets? Im thinking you do but just wanting to check. If you stack a batch of ships exactly on top of each other , you then click a ship, next in the bottom center of the screen you should see all your ships as small icons, click all the ships(Highlight) you want in a fleet then click create fleet just to the right of that.

You may well already know this though :) Im very new myself and if you get past the campaign apocalypse in the dreadlords campaign please let me know how you did it as Im stuck and wanting to try out all the expansions :)

No edit , just to say I did put a thread up but knowone has got back yet(Did see another 2 threaads but they didnt really cover specifics regarding research order and other stuff in the thread )

I figured how to do what I wanted in the game options. And double clicking on the PICTURE of the ship in the planet/ship options will take me directly to it. About the game options.. I just set the option to shuffle through all ships that are idle. It was really handy for a while. When I didn't need it anymore I just turned it back off.

Once my tech got high enough and I could actually build a decent ship, I figured out fleet. It was very straightforward... Man.. logistics really pays off.

I'm really enjoying the game. I just beat a custom game today.

It really helps to set with a smaller galaxy! I was ballsy and thought I could do a huge galaxy at normal AI. Can you say player abuse?! :-)

This aint master of orion that's for sure!!!

Wait till you start a gigantic, all-abundant, Painful (that is my highest setting). I was pulling my hair out by the handful. That game took me over 4 weeks of steady play to finish.

Uhh...was going to start another thread..but perhaps I can just ask here:

I'm doing better and having a blast on the gigantic map...BUT... I'm having a hell of a time keeping track of enemy ships coming in my sectors.. I mean .. I'm all over the galaxy and sometimes they sneak in..

Is there something that can alert me when an enemy ship comes close to an area?

I have great sensors and galactic eyes..but it takes forever to comb over everything .. Scrolling all the way out on the map does help though!

Thanks,

Hehe.. I'm doing gigantic at beginner level right now.. it's a fun way to learn the ropes and so far I'm kicking butt...except for the ships sneaking troop transports in on me from time to time..

Economy + Research is my main focus and it seems to be working well.
