capital ship explosion question

im trying to find out if it could be possible to change the explosion to kinda like the picture in weblink but with real 3d smoke trails like the ones when your capital is heavely damaged...any clue how to do that as of now the shockwave4

is only a 2d image that expandes with illusion of 3d but could be way better done with the real 3d smoke trails that
