How do you increase the AI's effectiveness?

...without giving them an unfair advantage...

After playing only a handful of games me and two friends played a 3v3, locked teams, against Hard AI.  We won effortlessly.  We didn't lose any cap ships in the process, we lost very few frigates/cruisers, and none of our planets were ever seriously threatened.  That was too easy to be enjoyable.  It was inevitable that we'd be able to handle the Hard AI sooner or later, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon.

Now, one obvious option for us is to play against more computers.  We could go 3v6.  However, I'm hoping it won't come to that so soon, as that type of thing really has limited appeal to me.  I was thinking that maybe the computer simply does better on certain types of maps, and under certain conditions.  What I would like to do is to play a game tailored to the computers strengths.

Is the computer better at maps with strategic bottlenecks?  Or with more wide open affairs?

Is the computer better at fast games with fast research? Or slow games with slow research?

Is the computer better at smaller maps? Bigger maps?

Maps with longer phase lanes? Shorter phase lanes?

etc?

I realise that the headline of 1.03 is better AI, and hopefully it will make the computer more competitive, but that's a week or two away.  Maybe nothing will make the computer, in its present form, challenging when played on even ground, but there has to be map types that the computer is at least mildly better at.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Nope.

It doesn't understand anything about the game. Doesn't build an economy, doesn't research technologies, doesn't build smart fleets. It's utterly brain dead, I can't think of one single thing it does right. It's not even fixable by giving it a helping hand, it will squander anything it is given doing very stupid things.

We will see what happens in 1.03, but brad and (I think) blair were telling people over on Qt3 that their AI was passable before 1.0 and we're now at 1.02 and it's still broken as fuck. I am really hoping that this was just an issue of the wrong code going out on the release and two subsequent patches. If what we have now is representative of what they think is good enough to release... well... in a way that's good because it'll dump some more people online, hopefully, but man people are going to be pissed if it's just the same shit with less running away and more teching up.

Best i can tell you is hard AI, high resources and unlocked teams. The v1.03 patch looks set to beef up the AI though.

Like you hinted, 1 player alone against 3+ hard AI(on one team) in locked team on a huge map with few bottle necks (AI has no idea how to use these, and if you end up using them, AI has a brain freeze). That ought to get you through to v1.03. Disproportional team sizes seems the only surefire way right now :( .Oh, and get the shortest phase lanes if you're making a map your self, so at least the fleet chasing doesn't take as long
