Upgrading all ships of a certain type?

Some thing I can't figure out is the upgrading process of ships.

1. Is there a short-cut to evoke the upgrade-menu?

2. When in the shipyard, I click on a design and say upgrade. Ok, that is fine. I chose the new components and all that and when finished, I click on save. It warns me, that I should not use the same name for the new design.
a) I chose a new name.
b) I chose the old name.
Either way, I do not get the option to upgrade all ships of that old type to the new type. I remember having that option sometimes (or was it in Dread Lords?).
How do I get that option?

Thank you for your help
Notger.

The Shipyard is just where you design ships. By saying a design is an upgrade of another design, you let the game know there's an upgrade path available. To get that, you have to actually go back into the game and select a ship that you want to upgrade. Click the Upgrade option and you should see a list of possible upgrades. It defaults to upgrading just the one ship. If you want to upgrade all ships of that type, there's a check box in the upper left section to do that. Once that's selected, you should see the cost to upgrade all ships and not just the cost to upgrade the one ship.

In addition to the above, if you choose to make a previous design obsolete and you still have ships of that type a little box opens telling you how many of them you have and asking if you'd like to upgrade them.

It would be nice to have the possibility to lease upgrades too or to punch in a number how many ships you want upgraded (and the computer just upgrades some ships of that type.
Right now, I try to keep renaming the exact kind of ship once every few weeks, so I can upgrade all of one kind without spending more than 15-20k BC.
Or rather: I forget renaming them and then I have to upgrade them 1 by 1. Yeah!
In my last gigantic game I forgot checking the price of my upgrade (since I usually play smaller maps). I ended up with -250k BC at the end of the turn and it took me a few turns to get out of the red.

Also, when you upgrade a design, shipyards producing the old type will automatically switch to producing the new type.

When upgrading all ships, I select a lease option on occassion so that's available in DL, should be there in DA as well.

In DL, I can save an upgrade using the same name and get the upgrade panel. DA does not provide that "feature". However, I quit doing it because I ran into problems on occasion. Now I just do what they recommend and use a new name. I append a number to the ship name and increment it every time, then upgrade ships from within the game.

An option to upgrade a subset of ships would be helpful. A more generic ship upgrade panel would be nice. In other words, a direct shortcut barring the requirement to select a ship first. Also helpful, an option to buy all ships of a certain type currently building.

I remember an old bug where I upgrades a ship to the same ship as before(I shose to upgrade it in the ship creator) and it cost me like infinity-billion dollars.

David Lessnau and DinkyCat, thank you for your answers. They were exactly what I was looking for. I remembered upgrading all ships at once earlier but after the break and after buying DA, I just couldn't figure it out, anymore.

Again, thanks.
