This one is of canberra ex-Bureau of Meteorology head Clem Davis, who came for new years day lunch. The main reason I did this pencil portrait was so I could do an oil painting later - it really needs colour. I plan to put some dark clouds in the background (for the oil version) hence the large blank background.

I had to take the pic at an angle 'cause of the reflection off the graphite.

EDIT: I've changed the picture slightly because I made the collar too low and stuffed up the neck slightly. I am a perfectionist at times. Rarely. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting>

Thank you. You can though, just get a photo and draw EXACTLY what you see. Focus on tones and shapes and their position in relation to each other, then practice practice practice and you'll do it.

Not yet, but if anyone offers me a commission I won't complain. Looking at other pencil portrait artists' sites I'd say it would be about US$110 (AUS$129) for a 11" by 16" single person portrait. It takes a fair bit of effort and time so it is a fair price really.

With the current trend towards various degrees of abstraction, it's nice to see someone who can actually DRAW


I won't say anything against abstract art, except really bad abstract art. It isn't really my thing but GOOD abstract art actually reflects a very keen sense of composition and so on. It think the problem is people that do it and never develop any actual technique, for instance these children prodigies you occasionally see on the news who sell their crap for thousands. I'll except the compliment anyway.
