Guard and Sentry ship commands don't seem to do anything

When I click Guard or Sentry for a ship or fleet, I can't tell that anything happens. I see that the appropriate boxes are checked in the Ship Details screen, but when I click the Find button, it keeps cycling back to the ship that has Guard or Sentry checked. It doesn't let me just forget about those ships, or at least put them at the end of the turn cycle.

Is it supposed to work this way, or am I missing something?

The guard function should make them not bother you to move every turn, unless an enemy approaches. You should be able to zoom in and it should say guard under the ship/fleet. The sentry on the other hand is kind of iffy in my experience. I think they'll lose sentry mode if any ship passes in their sensor range. They should also have sentry under them on the main map if in that mode. I personally only use guard mode, due to the sentry mode not "sticking" for long.

I had heard that Guard had problems with attacking other race's ships that had a bad relationship with you but were not yet at war. So I attempted Sentry more, but I could have sworn I'd tried Guard too. I'll give it another try.

Personally I'd settle for a "Last" command to take that ship out of the Find cycle until all the other ships have been gone through, or a "Wait" command to take the ship out of the cycle for a few turns (say five or so.) Other turn-based games have those features and I've found them VERY useful when you have a bunch of units to keep track of.

I know it has been said a gazillion times before, and I'll probably get bashed with a thousand wet Torians for saying this but...

I want CARRIERS!

Ok that was a joke, but I would like some form of patrol function, especially late game.
