so I want to defrag my HD to improve performance....

started last nite at 6pm, this morning its 35% complete! This is for a 100GB HD (49% full). Any defrag tools out there that are better/faster than what XP has? Thx.... p.s. I did boot to Safe mode b4 starting defrag.

Pretty much every defrag tool in existence will be faster than xp. I do mine about once a month, so it doesn't take as long, and I can't be bothered using my precious 1 gig HD space (I'ts not a gaming rig) to get a new one.

Sorry, but unless someone else has any ideas, you'll have to tough it out

Did you update your video drivers?
I would also consider sending in your debug.err file

Diskeeper does an amazing job, and it can run in the background, but it's expensive.

I use PQmMagic to make a smaller partition for XP and games, so I don't have to defrag my whote hd at once.

well i say your problem was booting to safemode

the drivers for your computer would be running UBER slow.

Also HArd drive access is switched to PIO which is like 10X slower the the normal method of using it....

Just create a new profile used only for defrad and disk scanning..

boot into that so it has the best speed

Don't bother using safemode for defragging, you'll be using the fallback IDE drivers which means your disc access times will suck hard.

The server lied to me.

I don't bother defragging, ever...

I just back it up, format and restore it - which works a lot better...

You using a single partition on that 100GB? or serperate ones for games/windows etc.?

I once left off defragging my 5 gig hard drive in my pentium 333 for two years... It ended up taking over a week of non-stop defragging to finish using the built in defragger.
