Rating the opposition

In the games I've played on Tough and Painful, a few races seem to stand out in terms of how well they manage. The Drath, Drengin, Torian and the Thalan always seem to do pretty well. On the other hand, the Yor and the Iconians seem to always to fairly bad. The Terrans, Altarians, Acreans and the Korx seem to do alright but never great. While I appreciate how the races feel distinctly different from each other, I'm wondering if it's possible that they're slightly unbalanced in regard to each other.

Does anyone share my impression, or do you rank them differently? It would be interesting to know!

It's random really.

I rank them differently depending on the game I am playing.

There are times when the Yor and the Drengin will beat the tar out of everyone else. There are also times when the Altarians will over run people with influence and the Torians will conquer most of the galaxy. The same is true of most of the races, in my experiance. I think a lot of it has to do with thier starting postions.

Starting positions have a HUGE influence on how the races (including yourself) fair.

I don't know why, but no matter how tough I set up the game, the Arceans seem to be my arch-nemesis. I found myself swearing at the screen at them, wishing I could talk trash--only to realize it was silly to hate an AI. Good job Stardock.

In all honesty, the custom races usually own in my games, oh wait... you meant the AI.

Honestly, before the beta it was pretty much fair game, a lot of it has to do with starting positions though. I've fought from Drath, to Dregins, to Altarians in endgame scenarios. Now though, the Torians and the Thalans are usually very strong, between them and myself, the others just haven't been fairing very well... the two times I turned them off, it seemed pretty much like usual, Drengin and Arcean in one game, Drath, Terran and Yor in the other. So I edited the Torians and Thalans before turning them on again. This was from beta 1, still testing the second...

Oddly for me it's usually the Terrans. The Altarians are pretty fierce if you let them reach late-game, and the Drengin and Yor are usually very strong also. But I usually kill off the Drengin before they become too strong or have them go to war with the Yor. Once in a while the Korx are pretty nasty too. I've never seen the other races do well.

Thanks for the input folks! I'm going to try a game with random AI intelligence on Painful tonight and that might upset the balance of power that I've come to notice in my games. In the game that I mentioned in the original post only the Thalans and Iconians remain beside the mighty Galactic Chicks. The Iconians were able to stay out of wars and slowly build up in a corner and eventually the Drath surrendered to them when I started conquering their planets. I've managed to ally with the Iconians and am presently at war with the Thalans who have an edge on me in terms of miniaturization and weapons reasearch, which is a big pain. Thankfully my militairy starbases do a fine job of evening out the odds a bit and I expect the Thalan treasury chest to empty soon enough.

Come to think of it, the Drath is a funny race. It's probably the only one, with the possible exception of the Altarians, that go to war despite being neutral towards me. Last time they told me they were simply too disgusted with me and had to wipe me out. I guess they didn't take kindly to my influence and my growing fleet.
