Patch Question

If you ever have to reinstall the game for whatever reason, can you update the game with the latest patch, or do you have to install ALL of the patches. Example: if I reinstalled Galciv2, would I have to install 1.0X and then 1.1 Beta or just 1.1 Beta? I always wondered that about patches.

I don't think I've ever seen a ghame or app where you had to sequentially install every patch. Just install the latest and you'll be fine.

Also, if you download the game to reinstall, you should always get the latest version without having to install any patches.

Microsoft products on both points. When installing say WinXP, after one patch comes another, then another and another...

Well I HAVE seen that before, but galciv has never been that way AFAIK. I installed galciv, bonus, material, then 1.1.. No problems not on the bugreport page so far.

I guess the answer will depend if you have SDC and an internet connexion on the computer on which you reinstall GC2. If you have, it is simpler to let SDC handle the upgrade. I you haven't, I GUESS that the 1.1beta pacth is a cumulative patch. The best way is to look at the size of the downloads: cumulative patch can't only increase in size

Well you can't really count hotfixes for "Windows" since it's a collection of hundreds of programs and a kernel rather than a single product. Still, you don't have to install SP1 before installing SP2, nor do you have to install Windows 2000 before XP. Those hotfixes are for specific issues too (fix security when doing X in app Y, etc) not incrementing the 'version' of Windows itself.

Still, the point being that for games that go up in version numbers, patches are 99.9999% always cumulative. Or just be lazy and use SDC.

As Monkey Pants pointed out. (Wow, say that one three times fast!) The 'patches' you're thinking of are more hotfixes than major patches. If you installed XP base w/out any service packs, you can go straight to 2 from base, no need to install 1. Yes, there are some hotfixes for hotfixes, but that's another story.
