Newbie needs help urgently

I cant generate money fast enough

Hi guys-now dont get me wrong i love this game-i think its richly immersive and very involving....problem is I dont have a clue how to generate enough money quickly so i can build some fleets and not be such a target for every rapacious empire out there. I am a complete newbie to this particular game though not to strategy games (Europa Universalis 1 and 2 and the Total War serires being 2 of my favourites)

I have read all the rules and had a good look at the forums here but i still dont seem to be able to generate money quickly for the Terran Alliance

I am playing on 'Normal' difficulty with 5 other races and the problem i find is that I just cant get my taxes high enough and sustain them so i have a good volume of cash coming in-result i have to rely on building ships rather than buying them=weak tech and income=a rapacious race attacking me

Can anyone help with a step by step guide to start me off as its become so frustrating i dont want to play it until i have a better idea what i am doing wrong

Any help appreciated

If you look at the recent news postings, there's a basic stragegy guide up.

Other than that, I try to research morale and economic boosting techs quickly.
Additionally, if you are ahead in the tech race, you can sell techs to shore up your economy during difficult times.

Easy, specialize your planets. Have ship producing planets and money producing planets.

Second thing, to get your tax up and maintain them, you need to keep your approval up, this means build less farms and more happy buildings (entertainment centers)

In fact, don't bother getting your population much higher then 5 or 10 billion - you don't need much more on your production planets. On your money planet (which should be high-quality so you have lots of space) build 2 happy building for each farm, build about 2-3 farms and fill the rest with economic buildings (and 2-3 factories to help build things)

Now, set your tax rate up as high as possible to keep your approval at around 55% and there you go, you should be making money!
If needed, you can reduce your spending rate a bit to help, try to keep it above 85% though.

Buying ships instead of building them? Dude! That is only a good idea in the very beginning where you have to colonize some planets quickly. Later on it's much more efficent to build things and that is because when you buy a ship you are paying actually much more than it's worth.

Actually from my experience i can say that you dont need to build any military ships and can concentrate on research/social instead. Only when somebody declares war on you must you start cranking military at 100% for a couple of turns. It works perfeclty because current AI tends to build really slow ships and you can easily build a whole armada by the time they appear in your territory (I'm talking about genius AI here, so on normal it should be even easier)

Good luck anyway

You might want to make about 3 defenders per planet or so after the expansion phase of the game, just to get your military rating up high enough that the the AI won't declare war for no reason at all. It doesn't always work, but it keeps smaller empires and such from declaring war opportunistically.

Well, at first, at least. By then you should be economic and technologically advanced enough to build some cool ships from a factory world and go kick ass in outer space.
