Techniques for Word-Of-Mouth Advertising

I really believe that it would be great for us to come up with some constructive ideas about how to tell our friends about Gal Civ 2, so please post your idea here if you've found it worked for you!

Personally, my technique is:

"Hey you know, the other day my friend who's a veteran in strategy games was telling me how great GC2 is, so being skeptical, I went to buy it yesterday after class, and the game is indeed awesome!"

or

"You know, my friend who always play FPS games had recently become addicted to this new strategy game. Oh, you ask what the name of the game is? I think it's called Gal Civ 2 or something"

or

"Today my TA (teaching assistant in college) who majors in artificial intelligence just told me that he had encountered the best AI in strategy gaming, he said it's called Galactic Civilization 2"

I'll add more later. In the meanwhile, keep the ideas going, guys!!

Of the people I talk to, they say they won't buy it because they don't need a new addiction

People aren't casually going to want this game, it's just way too deep for most gamers. You gotta know their tastes.

I called the Walmart headquarterd and inform them that they were loosing money for not having the game on all their stores!!!

Do what I do: "Have you ever played Civilization?"

"Yeah. I got Civ 4. It's GREAT!"

"Throw it away. Gal Civ 4 slaughters it."

"You serious?"

"Yup."

That's it. Now if they can only get it on the shelves...

Don't say "Turn-Based." Turn based games are the victim of bad PR started when RTS games came along. Just say Civ 4 and people will bite.

Mine was pretty simple. I was looking at screenshots at work. My boss walked into my cube and asked me what I was looking at (you know, instead of working) and I told him about it. Showed him a few more screenshots, explained how much you could customize the look of ships, and viola, he ran out to the Best Buy down the street and bought it during lunch.

The most effective way in my opinion is visiting the other space TBS game forums... then creating a topic which compares that game to this current game. As long as you compare the two games it's a valid topic.

Great idea! After I am done with my work today, I'll go to Civ IV's forum and run a comparison thread.

Well I just go and say "it's like what MOO3 should be" for most of my friends it's enough

Creating a topic which compares that game to this current game on other space TBS forums will possibly reach hundreds of gamers. Make sure both games are being compared otherwise the topic will be dropped into some OFF-TOPIC forum which is viewed less frequently by gamers.

Personally, I use the screenshot method, then I talk about the starship builder, then I bring in the few people that i've already converted to add to my voice. I made a guy order a new PC (his old one being solely a go-on-the-net pc) in order to play this game.
I was also able to convince the manager at the EB games I went and bought my game from to try this game.

Of course, this only works either at school or at work.

In general though, this game doesn't NEED to be sold, you just need to get your friends to -try- it, then the're hooked.
