A simple thing that SD got exactly right

I just wanted to say that starting with 5k bc is a really great design decision - it's a great way to avoid those early game doldrums (or to have a nice war chest ready-made, although the present value of the cash decreases the longer you don't use it if you're not getting interest, but I digress).

I know after all the effort the team put in to graphics and UI, this took approximately 10 seconds to do, but it's a huge improvement to other 4x games I've played (including galciv 1). Thanks.

Yeah, it's really amazing how much that levels the playing field too, making the game much less dependant on the map you end up getting isn't it?

I suspect a decent % of civ4 games are won or lost based on whether or not your 1st city has corn next to it.

Starting with the cash to expand quickly gets you right into the good parts of the game quickly, and allows you to at least have a fair chance on any map you get.

Yes, that was an excellent idea.

It also makes the game much more skill-dependent from the get-go. In MoO2, you basically memorize the "optimal build path", and you're set for the first 30-40 turns. In GalCiv2, there are important choices to be made starting from Turn 1, and your strtegy must be adapted to the situation at hand. Do you purchase a scout ship straight-up, or wait a few turns so it's cheaper, or build it? Do you take the risk of blowing a bunch of credits on a quick extra colony ship in the hope of finding a planet with it soon? When do you stop purchasing planetary improvements and let the planet build for itself? How low do you dare dip on cash?

Very interesting tactical considerations. Kudos

Not quite playing my fave: hyper, max attack, feudal, bad science, rest defence/ground.
The strategy was the same, invade before your neighbor built a missile base.
Slight variations in how you got there.
If a space eel was in the way I was screwed. A space crystal was dead meat.

I must fire it up again while I wait.

EDIT: has me hungering that bit more.
