An alliance can be broken, a team cannot. Either way, you cannot declare war on your allies/team and thus it may trip the alliance victory. A reason it may have turned on magically may be due to the campaign. Often the setting from the campaign will spill over into the setting for a sandbox game's next setup.

Also a note about race-wide spies. Pull them off a race that is about to die off if at all possible. There is a current bug that will not let them return to the pool once the race dies out. And if you got plenty of game left, you'll even go up in intel levels since those spies are still placed on the dead race. I prefer to call them 'archeologists' at this point. Other than that, LTjim summed it up pretty well. More info on them however can be found here

Shameless self promotion of this subject: http://forums.impulsedriven.com/316263 Quick and dirty answer though: Pre 2.x patch for DA/TA, you allocate spending to gather spies. Place them on their planets and in time (see thread for details) you gain intel levels. Post 2.x patch for DA/TA (only available via Impulse. SDC doesn't carry this) you still allocate spending to gain spies.

The ships your were monkey-stomping may have been old-school ships they made long ago with outdated tech. The one that steamrolled you may be made from a new weapon tech (and advancements in miniturization) they just learned, which seems to be a higher tech of weapon than you currently have. If the race went Evil via Xeno Ethics, they may be using a Psyonic-series weapon, which has a real high dmg output for the point at which you get it in the tree...actually beating out future
Keep your nose to the wind Loup.
Oh, I did...but being in Baltimore Inner Harbor, I just smelled the Chesapeake, the aquarium, the zoo or a nice southern-style vinegar sauce on a pulled pork samich and 2 tall glasses of Stella Artois at hard rock.... Found a use for fries...to sop up leftover sauce from the plate. Much more 'civilized' than licking the plate like at home.

Bombs went off in Indonesia? I know I was out of touch with the world news when I went on vacation...but normally something like that catches my eye. I blame the reduced news on my mobile phone's internet... Glad to hear your ok though.

I'm unsure which patch version is in the box of Ultimate, but registering your game via Impulse will be how you can tell that you are up to date. BTW, Impulse will be the only way to patch the game, so IMHO you mine as well get that part over with. Unless your internet connection is slow or are too young to own a credit card for purchases, I'd just recommend a direct download of the game via Impulse....less clutter around your house.

GW covered the issue at hand w/ spies 100% However your followup question...I don't know of anyway to do something that would 'ascend' your race into a super race. Here is the DA/TA Espionage thread GW was speaking of. http://forums.impulsedriven.com/316263
2. You also need Advanced espionage, gotten by planting civ-level spies on that opponent. Once you reach Advanced, you must have at least one spy placed on a building to have a chance to steal.
I've had tech steals happen prior to Advanced, but I'd have to guess the chance goes up as the intel level goes up. Due to the absoulte randomness of this portion of espionage, I gave up on trying to come up with numbers on it [e digicons] Agreed on the 'm

4) Well, by playing on beginner, you are making the AI suck. Its all fine and good to get an idea on the mechanics of the game...but don't expect a fight to be held against you. Tough is when the AI is no longer held back, et doesn't have any bonuses yet. To get an idea of what the AI is like..try it on Tough. Once you get to play the full game, you won't be limited to those map settings and you should be fine for the feel of the galaxy.

Invoking cheats will stop the game from being posted to the Metaverse, but that is about it. As for the 'stupidity' of not being able to invade if they have something in orbit, what if that space miner would ram your troop ship? Blame it on the Transport Pilots Union of the Galaxy for creating these rules that their members must follow.

Custom Races: There are some racial bonuses that you just can't touch via the points system, let alone being able to take those racial bonuses and stack on the bought points. However, they have more points to spend so you could get more different things, they have no inherent negatives (something new in TA, some stock races now get minuses). By use of a custom race though, you can swap up tech trees and super abilities. Taking the Krynn tree and the Super Diplomat is a

Also to note, a Trade Good cannot be effectively lost. If the planet you built the building on is conquered, you still have the benefit of the trade good, as well as does the race that took the planet. If you take the planet back, they still have the trade good. So the 2 things the building itself does is 1) get the trade good into play 2) the holder of the building can sell the trade good to a race that doesn't have it yet.
