This sounds like a good idea. I reckon you should be able to research carriers after you have completed your large hulls research, and you'd have to build one like a normal ship, then create the ships you wish to board onto it seperately. A similar fashion to putting units on boats in games like Age Of Empires.

I find a good tactic is to built a large invasion fleet first, then take over a large amount of their space in a few short turns. Once this has been done, offer a peace treaty, but make them pay you money and technologies for the peace. They are usually eager to make up once their empire starts to crumble. I've read a few post about people having trouble with the Torians. Here's a game example that I played through: On a huge galaxy, with the difficulty on Challenging, I grabbed a nice spot of the galaxy for myself, but the Torians took over a large, central portion of the map.
