Windows cannot find "(null)"

Lately, when dl clicking on a file...eg a jpg .... Paintshop Pro loads...but this error pops up.  Then I dl click on the file again and it'll load.

This is using Explorer Plus....but Windows Explorer is the same.

I'm assuming I have a service stopped that cause the error....yet dl clicking on a doc file loads word just fine.

Any ideas?

Google didn't help as any refs to the error appear to be different issues or system-wide...;)

Sounds like your .dll service, but just for the hell of it, open Folder Options/File Types, scroll to the JPG entry and make sure " "%1" is at the end of the 'Open With' string. You can just re-associate the file type and accomplish the same thing.

[open("%1")]

that's the DDE message in the open action for the filetype....

It does load PSP .... but it doesn't load the image into PSP...not until you double click the image once more...

that's the DDE message in the open action for the filetype....

That's not all that's written there, is it?

Just how of curiosity...what icon is represented for your jpg files........

Also...if I get to the reassociation dialog...'open with'...always use this proggy...while right clicking on an image...eg 'pic.jpg'...the PSP loads but the error then becomes 'windows cannot find  c:\[whatever]pic.jpg'....

...so I'm no better off...again PSP loads without the image...

Change the association to something else....Paint or something...and see if it opens correctly. If it does, then the error is with PSP (since it shows the PSP icon and other associations work (Word), my guess would be that's where the problem lays.

OK...shall give it a go....

Wait a minute......I just saw #7.

Action: &Open
Application used to perform action: C:\progra~1\Paints~\psp.exe "%1"
DDE Message: delete entry
App and Topic are correct.

Ah...Eureka....that's got it.....worked for jpg....but I guess I need to do this each time for other associated types as well...

You got nothin' better to do anyway..........

.........I love happy endings
nope...doesn't remember the settings....goes back to that dde on the end
Reply #14 Top
I should click on the 'use dde' radio button and deselect it?
Leave everything as it was, but put the "&" before "open"........that should stick....and work.
Nope...every time I change it it forgets and next time I load to edit it it has reverted back to as the screenshot....doesn't remember the change...

I'm wondering if PSP is using OLE instead of DDE...hmmmmm...try deselecting DDE and see what happens..

&open 'sticks'...but the settings don't....ergo the image still doesn't load...
OK...one more question....what version of Windows are you using?

XP Pro...with SP2.....but this error is only recent...nothing to do with the SP2, etc...

Gonna reboot after resetting associations in PSP...and see if it's pain free now...

That's what I thought. We're so old that those folder names appear normal to us (as in DOS). They should be in long file name format. Type in the actual path and see if that does the trick. Something changed that format...a PSP update or some other recent graphics proggie. You do either of those by chance?

Other recent Paint proggies...like paint.net ....that's about it...graphics-wise.

BTW...rebooted...and it reverted to settings as in the screenie....just has '&open' now instead of 'open'

full path didn't help

Re-opening the association window and it's reverted to the shortened naming...

I'm running out of ideas....check both PSP and Paint.net settings and make sure you don't have conflicting associations. Make sure there's no 'default' file folder setup in either. I assume that no jpg images anywhere on your drive are working correctly, right? Try creating a new image in both proggies and see what they do.
