I can't activate the demo!

I just foundout about GALCIV yesterday, and I downloaded the demo to see if I would like the full-version game. However, as soon as I finished downloading, the file became a CIVMAP file (for civ 3). I don't know how to change this so it becomes 'playable'. can you tell me how?

That's bizarre. Rename it as a .EXE file to run the installer.

Luke,
You obviously enjoy all things Star Wars. If you eventually purchase the game, there is a Star Wars mod available that adds a distinctive flair to the game.

Also, you may want to join an empire. Ours is named "The Republic" and as such would be a natch for you to join!

If you right click on the file name, you will get a pop-up menu. Select "Rename" from the menu and then you will be able to type in a new name for the file.

The download isn't a .exe but a .zip file.
EXE files don't have associations, they are executables.

Somehow in your system .zip files are associated with Civmap(?).
If you don't have Winzip or Winrar installed, install them. If they are installed try to set their associations to zip files.

If all else fails goto START->Programs->Accesories->Windows Explorer.
In Windows Explorer Goto Tools->Folder Options.
Goto File Types Tab.
Let it search.
Scroll down to the ZIP entry and choose Change Association or Change.
Browse to C:\ProgramFiles\Winzip and choose the Winzip.exe to associate the file with.

Any or All of those should work.

I think I know what is going on. I'll bet that you have the option selected to hide file extentions in your folder. This means that it only shows the file name without the file extention ( for example .exe, or .txt)

When you rename the file, even if you add a .exe to the end it will keep the original file extention after the one you added, but it will still be hidden.

So what you have to do is turn off the option that hides the file extentions so that you can change the name properly. I am working with Windows 2000 right now, so your version of windows may or may not be the same:
Open the folder with your file.
Go to the 'Tools' dropdown menu and choose 'Folder Options'.
Go to the 'View' tab and uncheck the box 'Hide extention for known file types'.
Rename the file.

If your windows version is different, you may need to hunt around for this option a little, but it should be there somewhere.

Luke, shouldn't you be joining the Rebellion rather than the Republic? ;)
