Early July Game of the Month!

Early July Game of the Month!

You may now download the Early July Game of the Month (if there's enough interest, I'll run two every month) from the following site:

http://home.ptd.net/~mpcasey/

This one should pose more of a challenge than previous months. All aliens are set to "Intelligent" and their alignments are randomized.

Your objective: conquer the galaxy as quickly as possible.

I've also updated the site so that it no longer looks like it's from 1995. Take a look. It's from at least 1998 now!

In fact, it looks like all of the possible victory conditions can be accelerated by doing a military rush

It's a shame, yeah. And I really can't think of a way out of it, either.

As far as the next one goes... I'm going to remain tight-lipped until the 15th! ;)

Ok I just finished, I don't have any screen shots, but I do have notes on my strategy and tactics.

Finished with military victory Feb 2187.
I also got the Info Warfare bug on the last turn, so one system has 430 billion pop.

Oh, and what program takes screenshots? I saved two game positions that I wanted to take a screen shot of.

Gengsta - while you are on the screen you want to capture, hit the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. This saves the screen to the O/S clipboard.
Next open up Microsoft Paint (or any other graphics program) and Paste (ctl-c). this will paste the "Print Screen" image into the graphics program, and then you can save it to disk....

Thanks, I'll consider sharing some screen shots then.

I looked around the site and ended up sending the saved game to your email, Michael. I'll see what I can do with Apolyton.

Rushes would still be viable regardless of victory condition (except maybe alliance). If you truly want no conflicts or rushes, specify a condition such as no invasions or no transports, etc.

Ha, didn't notice the second page.

Awesome, Gengsta!

BTW, we're now the Fellowship, no longer the Council.

Personally, I've never done a tech victory, but I agree with the point you are making. In fact, it looks like all of the possible victory conditions can be accelerated by doing a military rush

The military rush executed to help a tech victory is very different from the military rush to win by military conquest.

If you read my AAR in the discussion thread, you'll notice that I spent maybe 16 months building infrastructure. The rest of the time, my systems were either cranking out research or building up my military. When I won the game, my economy was in shambles because I was spending 45% of my tax income on military upkeep. Before I sold a ton of tech to the minors, I could only afford a spending rate of 20%. Although Ray was slower in his victory by 25 months, in a race to tech victory, he would have won easily.

It would have required more than a year just to fix up my economy and build up all the necessary infrastructure, and then I would need to catch up by researching Battleship Tech. Meanwhile Ray would not need to culturally flip the last race and would have plowed the money spent on constructors into teching and social improvements.

The ideal tech rush would require a strong economy supporting a vigorous teching schedule, a sleek but strong military without excess bagage, and a modest social spending to stay modern.

The rush has an entirely different feel to it. For tech victory, it's balance. For military conquest, it's pushing the limit.

Note: I was very careful to minimize the spoilers.

Well, I'm not sure I agree with you, Gengsta. (Or maybe I misunderstand what you're saying.) Seems to me that, while it may be better to rush a bit more slowly than you did, it's still quicker to a tech victory by:

1. Establish hegemony over the galaxy as quickly as possible.
2. Then put all funds into infrastructure and research.

I may be wrong on this, though. I haven't played to a tech victory nearly enough.

I agree with you. Establishing hegemony is better for all types of victories. It's just that to get a tech victory, you cannot ignore infrastucture during the rush.

It would be better to support a slower attack, not hemorrhage your population away, and put some money in social improvements. Maybe make a trade good or a galactic wonder, at least an economic or a manufacturing capital.

Hello!
Thank you for the game Michael, I just uploaded my file to Apolyton. Time to finish and a short AAR will be in the discussion thread.

Hmm,a little suggestion for a future GOTM:
How about playing with an advanced start, where the contestants have to master a certain situation at the beginning...for example a Fundamentalists rebellion?

One last bump.

If anyone else would like to play, please remember that you now only have two days in which to finish and send me your game.

Galaxor: I like your idea, but the next two games are pretty much set up now. I hope to do something like that at some point.
