Problems with ships recieved as gifts...

When the AI gives you ships it does not bother to bring then anywere near your space. Most of the time they are out of their max travel range and dead in the water from the moment you get them. This is especialy annoying because of course they generaly give you the ships when you need them urgently to protect yourself. :(

Would it be practicle to make it so the AI moves ships at least some distance in your general direction before giving then to you? Or maybe those ships would automaticaly move tward your nearest planet without your control. Or you could just have then magicaly apear in orbit of one of your worlds the moment they are signed over. That last is a little unrealistic admitedly but it I think in this case smooth gameplay should take precidence over strict realism. Plus it would probably be the simplest solution.

Basicaly, its not a crippling problem but when it comes up i find it realy annoying, can anything be done?

...and dont anybody say to just sell the ships, thats obvious and moderately helpful, but it doesnt realy address the original issue.

The answer is: autopilot. Just select a destination inside the highlighted range and autopilot there. Your new gift ship will still have to travel, but you at least can get it somewhere useful then. Autopilot also works in crossing gaps when you have two range areas that are separated by a void.

I like the fact that they don't automatically appear somewhere. I give ships all the time to Civs at war (that I have strategically placed), just so they can attack each other right away. It's great fun to watch. LOL

Never tried to move your ships via rightclick on the map instead of making every single move manually?

You CAN move them.

Combine #2 and #4 - right click on a valid destination (where is valid will depend on the range of the ship in question and the location of your starsystems/starbases). It can take a while, but they'll get there.

BTW - I love this - I get to check out a lot of the galazy that I shouldn;t be able to see which these ships are slowly coming home.
