Today I installed GalCiv on my PC at home (WinXP). When I play the game, the music now sounds distorted, I only hear small fragments of music. This didn't happen on my PC at work where I run Win98. I already tried reinstalling everything from Drengin.net to soundcard drivers. I can't find any erros in the debug.err ...
Both machines have a Creative SB PCI128 card.

Does the music sound fine if you play them in an mp3 player? They are located in \Drengin.net\galciv\music and \Drengin.net\galciv\Event Music

I have the same problem on my grandparents computer when playing MS Flight Sim 2k2. The problem is something with the video. Although it's not related to the sound drivers. Goes to show that all things interact with each other.
