Version Question

How can you find out what version you are using? When you alt-tab and then place the mouse over the game icon while it is running it ALWAYS shows v1.00 and I have supposedly installed every patch update their is.
Also when you use the Drengin.net service to download the patches and extras how are you supposed to get all of the files to apply to the game? It does nothing more than copy them into a directory that is totally seperate from the Galac. Civ directory. I had to physhically go in and cut and paste all of the files into my own directory. This is not something I want to be doing everytime.
Note:Some of the files in the updates are actually smaller than the ones that originally came with the game and the game will not run with these "new" smaller files. I had to go back and reinstall the old files (there are about 4 of them ranging from the data directory to the Gfx directory all smaller and all of which will not run with the new versions. The patches sure are not set up with ease in mind. P.S. Now when I go to start a new Civ the first screen where I chose my party affiliation shows as "string not found". When you click on the ? marks there is no information about the parties either. All the information just seems to be gone.
