Bug Reports for 1.13

Bug Reports for 1.13

Please post bug reports here for version 1.13.

If you are asked to send a save game, I will need both the .sav file and the folder with the same name.  Zipping them usually works best.

My e-mail is carielf@stardock.com.

Please give detailed explanations on how to reproduce bugs.  More information is better than less.

If people start out reading this thread, there will be less repeat bug reports, and it will be easier for everyone to read this thread.

Thanks.

yes unless you get the fix that Cari posted in the Tech Sharing UP Issues in 1.13 thread it should be the 1st post in that thread theres a text file that tells ya how to do the changes

On the invisible ships-- don't know if my experience is consistent, but I see it under 2 conditions--first, my game has been active for many hours without restarting galciv ..., and second when I have a type of ship I haven't previously had in the game.
End of quote

Yes, it appears with new items. I played on large and found a Precursor Ranger -> it was invisible. Same seems to be true for new planet classes. I did not see it after Terraforming, but after a culture flip. Maybe this helps to hunt the bug. I'm used to this bug since good old OS/" days, thus don't hurry ;)

2) AI races like to make decisions after loading a game. I often get declarations of war or peace right after the game loads.
End of quote

Yes, this one makes it a hard decision. Should I go on with invisible ships and planets, or reload and invite the AI to make weard decisions (last time torians declared war without notifying me, we were on "friendly" conditions).

Wanted fix:
When you have multiple survey ships on auto they often end up going to the same spot, thus being horribly inefficient. Is there any way to fix this? Manually searching on large+ maps is brutal.
End of quote

Yes, auto survey with multiple ships would be a good reason to buy GC2 or the expansion :)

Probably not exactly a bug, but something I think ought to be different.

On the "show sector ownership" mini-map, you don't know who owns sectors you haven't seen personally in the main map. But switching to "manufacturing" or "population" mode reveals ownership, even in unexplored sectors.

Surely that's not ideal.

 J.T.Qwerk:

Please install SmartException and have it running when you play Gal Civ.  This generates a file called GalCiv.exe.cra when Gal Civ crashes, and you can send that file to me the next time you get a crash.  In the meantime, please send me your save games that can reproduce the crashes. I need both the .sav file and the corresponding folder.

Lord J: also, if you put them in the mods folder and did not move your current tech files out of the data folder, you may be having problems because of the higher tech ID numbers in the original files.

WalkerintheMist: can you find the exalibur tech in any of your .tech files?

(6) I had a survey ship (not a Star Hawk) with 16 attack. I did have Star Hawk researched, but I didn't expect it to upgrade an existing survey ship. (Note the survey ship was built during the game; the original one had been destroyed.) Very convenient for killing space sharks though.
End of quote

Survey ships can explore anomalies that give them bonuses to attack and defense. These bonuses apply only to that ship, and not to any others in a fleet with it.

I seem to remember someone reporting that moving the window when playing the game in windowed mode messed up the mouse cursor.  It doesn't do this on my laptop, so I don't know if I fixed it or if it's just scared of me. :)  Anyway, if you could confirm if you're running windowed or fullscreen, I'd appreciate it.

On a few occasions I've clicked "turn" to start the next turn and nothing happens. I can still operate the controls and move through the various screens, but the AI doesn't move. Reloading doesn't help, quitting and reloading does. (One time I managed to shake it loose, but I can't remember how.)
End of quote

It may be waiting for one of your ships to do something.  If you have a ship selected, try moving it to see if it's expended all of its move points.  Or it may be waiting for a colony ship who is trying to colonize a planet on its last move of autopilot.

1,3, 12, and possibly 19 have been fixed on our end and will be fixed in the next update.

Scott, are you playing windowed? Have you recently installed or upgraded any media player programs or updated your sound or video drivers? If you haven't upgraded or installed any media player programs recently, which ones do you have installed? Please e-mail me your dxdiag report along with the answers to these questions.

Hurley, I've got a couple of your scores in the database showing up with your Gal Civ serial number instead of the drengin.net one.  You may want to go to the metaverse page and follow the instructions for converting your scores, then remove the old serial number from your registry.  (Note: it is ALWAYS a good idea to backup your registry before making ANY changes.)

End of quote

Yes, there is, but I haven't found an efficient way to do it.  I started to fix this once, but it was slow.  So it's on the back burner for awhile.

Any chance someone would be willing to type up a sort of "digest" just of the important info from this thread which new 1.13 users might need to know?
End of quote

With the next update, when I make a new thread for bug reports, I'm going to link to a copy of my bug report spreadsheet so that you guys can search it.  But I have to get it under control first; there's a lot of redundant entries or stuff that I fixed but forgot to take off.  In the meantime, go ahead and just report it.

Thanks Cari, hmm, did that last week and got the 12 Jan submission to work. Ah well, will do so again.

Cari:

There is no Excalibur tech in my .tech file (only have one) - gctech.tech in my data directory.

I'm playing the 1.13 version without the UP fix (because I'm lazy).

As a side note - I ran into the making decisions after loading problem. In this case it is unfortunately connected to the recalculation of culture after reloading a game. Some of my starbases are sitting in what are alien controlled sectors prior to the proper (re)calcualtion - causing repeated demands for bases and subsequent war as soon as I reload a game. It is an odd situation, but maybe a reason to take a look at the recalculation issue.

Someone mentioned the mouse cursor issue - I'm running full screen and have the same problem. If I'm not careful I get constant miss clicks on the diplomacy screen.

Edited for clarity and spelling and added the mouse cursor issue.

WOW Cari... you sure are working hard.... thanks for your responce(s) I'm sure I talk for everyone in saying THANKYOU

BTW Installing Smart exception as I type this.. will incluse it along with the save files..

Do you have the bonus pack installed, WalkerInTheMist? If it is showing up as installed, grab the data files from here:

http://www.joeuser.com/sdfiles/data%201.13.zip

This will overwrite the entire contents of your data folder, so if you have any mods mixed in there, this would be a good time to move them to the Mods folder. :D

Wow! Thank you for the fast response. I will check as soon as I get out of class.

If I could figure out how to do the worship smiley I would use it right now. :)

Cari, File has been Zipped and sent ;)

Thanks in Advance

CariElf- I have a save file that can reproduce a game hang unrelated to the aforementioned UP issue. I could install SmartException, but it is unlikely to show anything since the game hangs instead of crashing. Where should I send the save file/folder?

Slothrop: zip the save file and folder and attach it in an e-mail to carielf@stardock.com

Sigh. The inconstancy of bugs :notsure: I triggered this one repeatedly last night, and then when I decided to try it again just now before sending the save file+folder today, it's gone! :notsure:

I ALWAYS get a complete lock-up on UP vote on tech-sharing! Very annoying! Is there a fix for this?

I guess it was due to my transport passing their territory. But still I would like to be informed ...

All these events should happen on dedicated point in time during each turn and not additionally at every reload of a game.

Dear CariElf

do you have any comment on Sirian's finding with the "turns left for a research project"? It's in his post from Jan 20, 2004 07:58 AM:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=c3cd240458947703bc571d8ff9a6cb40&threadid=72311&perpage=20&display=&pagenumber=4

The condense of his statement is that the bonus reasearch due to your abilities is cached from the last turn. In the current turn only the net spending is calculated correctly and displayed in your economy screen.

Example: When you had a high spending in the turn before, you still get a "Next turn" for techs which cost less than your bonus from the turn before, even your sliders are at zero.

I would really appreciate when you could have a look into it. In some games it is very important to micro manage your tech spending and currently it is nearly impossible.

Is there any chance to get a fix with 1.2?

Sirian found another bug. I always wondered why the AI build staff when they don't have the tech yet.

I was always a little upset about it. I work hard to research key techs and the AI get's it for free :notsure:

Due to Sirian it happens when you put it in your governor's list.

I nomiate Citizen Sirian for a promotion (actually I don't know how the promotion system works, does it totally rely on Metaverse?).

One of the things that I've been working on lately is getting the various screens to update correctly, but the painting/refresh code is probably the most inefficient and messiest code that we have, so it's taking me time.

I'll remind Brad to fix the AI's tech tree.

G'day Cari,
I just checked. My registry key, stardock central info, and the galciv site all show my dregin net upgrade serial number not my original galciv serial number. Game submissions dated 2004/1/18 don't show. Any ideas?

To avoid this situation, don't put anything in the first governor's queue, Mr. Ford I think. AIs will build only what they earned if you leave that queue empty.

G'day Cari,
just in case, reedited registry keys, and submitted another. Doesn't seem to have shown up.

It shouldn't take even a minute to submit the data. What kind of connection do you have? Do you have any firewalls or add blockers running? Do you have Paint Shop Pro 8 installed?
End of quote

I have a Broadband connect similar to but not cable. I connect through a hardware firewall (R0318 Netgear router). Blackice (BlackD) is also running, sort of and is used for VPN connections. A VPN process CVPND and NvCplDaemon is started. These last three are startup processes. There is also an ICS client (ICSDCLT) startup process (XP internet connection sharing client). No Paintshop Pro...

I did open debug.err. I could not identify a location where data was being submitted. This may mean there were no errors to submit. However, I did notice the following:
Debug Message: MemMan: Unable to find pointer in GetBlockInfo. Memory system: Palette
ASSERT ERROR in file G:\PROJECTS\pear\SOURCE\MEMMAN.CPP at line 581.

There are others some similar to the above. Thanks for following up.

You mean that only Mr. Ford has this problems and the others can keep a secret? Could you verify this? If so, I would send this double agent in prison until our intelligence service got the upper hand again :)

When this is true we should inform CariElf or in this case Brad.
