Bug Reports for 1.13

Bug Reports for 1.13

Please post bug reports here for version 1.13.

If you are asked to send a save game, I will need both the .sav file and the folder with the same name.  Zipping them usually works best.

My e-mail is carielf@stardock.com.

Please give detailed explanations on how to reproduce bugs.  More information is better than less.

If people start out reading this thread, there will be less repeat bug reports, and it will be easier for everyone to read this thread.

Thanks.

I'm also getting the UP tech sharing hang. Running XP it's possible to CTRL-ALT-DEL out and kill the game--it's showing 98% utilization before I kill it. Afterwards it reloads fine and if it goes to UP at all then the vote is usually different.

Finished my latest game (my first victory on masochistic--woohoo!)

Found a few more typos.

Typo: In the list of trade goods, one is listed as "Hyper computers". All other resources with 2+ words have their second word capitalized.

Typo: I didn't catch some of it, but one of the techs that gives you access to an Omega something has two periods at the end of its description. (Will look more closely next game).

Typo: In the military projects list, when you select colony ship it becomes boldface and a second space is added between the words. (I notice a lot of spacing is odd in the game but this looks particularly bad).

Typo: When selecting a political party, if you select War Party to the right in the description box it says WarParty with no space at all.

Typo: In the list of technologies that can be selected, medical theory has two spaces in it.

As you can see, spacing issues are a pet peeve of mine. : )

On reloading a save game where I dominated the galaxy, the Space Sharks asked me for a peace treaty. Probably not intended behavior.

I made a new UP issue where you vote to enforce a standard government type. The game would completely lock up when it came up (the UP screen wouldn't appear, it would freeze right before) unless I included "No Change" as an option. I don't know if you ment for "No Change" to be a required option in those votes or not, but I know it shouldn't freeze when the vote comes up.

drjameson:
I think you might have a bad CD. I've never heard of that problem before. I'm not sure this is where your posting goes because you are trying to install the gold version (not 1.13), but since this is the active bug thread, this is as good a place as any. :)

That's hilarious. You sure had those Space Sharks shaking in their boots. :)

BTW - did you agree to the treaty, and did they attack you after that (if you did)?

In my current game I have a new CTD (new to me): there is a resource (pink I think), probably one of thoses that you grab with the survey ship in the begining (except I'm near end game), that I've just noticed. Everytime I click on it I have a CTD (had it yesterday, and today just checked twice in the autosave that it was still happening).

Correction: it was a Carinoid cargo ship (one of the tiny ones) -- I just saw it destryed by the altarians.

I experienced something similar, also. I don't know who owned the mini-freighter, but it was bright red. Clicking on it crashed the game. Also, the mini-freighter couldn't move.

Couple of bugs I've noticed:

Game occasionally quits to the desktop if I destroy a colony :(

On one occasion the computer wouldn't let me build a starbase on a resource - can't build starbase within 3 parsecs of each other - so I destroyed the nearby yor starbases and it still wouldn't let me build there until the game was almost over

The AI always accepts military ships as gifts even if it can't pay for their support, last game I gave the altairians a load of dreadnoughts for a couple of hundred BC's per turn for 100 years which when combined with their maintenance costs bankrupted them and then their colonies morale took a nosedive and they all deserted to join my empire. Not really a bug thoughmore of an AI issue(which is generally pretty good) and it won me the game so I don't mind too much, but a tad unrealistic I feel. Would any government accept a deal which was going to bankrupt them?

Yes, and no (but the game didn't last much longer).

I wish I'd thought to check their cash supply and other stats :)

anyone else reported the starbase bug I described earlier?
End of quote

Umm...which one is that? I scanned through the previous posts and couldn't see it.  I can check it on my tracking spreadsheet, but I need a little more to go on.  Or are you referring to the disappearing ships bug?

Darkspire, can you please tell me what you re-formatted them as?

fenris, we usually try to keep the save games backwards compatible, but either it wasn't possible or one of the new coders forgot/didn't know how to do it for some of the changes this time. I'm working on a new format that will require less work on our part to keep the save games compatible.

Is it normal for the AI to build improvements they don't have the tech for yet? In my current game, an Alexian world flipped to me and it had a stadium already built even though I am the only empire with the knowledge of extravaganza.
End of quote

Umm, I can't think of anything off hand that would cause that.  If you e-mail me the save game, I'll take a look at it.

Anyone whose games are not submitting to the metaverse, please check your debug.err file for debug messages related to submission.

I found another bug with starbases. I can build starbases closer to each other then 3 parsecs (= 3 squares) and I have the savegame to prove it. Both starbases are not on a resource. I thought that, a couple patches ago, this was changed due to starbase abuse.
End of quote

I'll need both the .sav file and the folder with the same name as the .sav file.  But I think that I fixed this after the 1.13 release. I just checked the code and it looks fine on the surface; I'd have to do a little more digging if it ends up still being a problem.  The logic is kinda goofy for the check, to make it ignore resource starbases, which is why I had trouble nailing this one down.

When i try and click on the menu tab, my computer freezes up completely and i have to restart the machine manually.
End of quote

haskellal, please send me your prefs.ini file from your data folder.

This crash can occur either at the beginning or the end of the animation. The particular BSOC error message I get is DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL
End of quote

First of all, make sure that you have all the latest drivers and the latest version of DirectX.  If you still have problems, run dxdiag and send the report to me.

the patch 1.12 for the french version has a bug: only two propositions at UP. the only way to correct it is to download the 1.13 version, but then the game reverts to full english. If you have a solution for this, thanks
End of quote

Not unless people translate the 1.13 data files to french for me. :)  I have a partial translation in my inbox that I have to try running the game with to make sure that there aren't any errors that will cause crashes, etc.

Platinum Steel, did you also get the monster.ship file? If so, zip up your whole data folder (including your save game) and send it to me and I'll see if I can figure out if there are any additional files that you need.

LavaLampMaster, please send me the save game, with both your .sav file and the corresponding folder.

i am not sure if anyone saw this but in one game, the altarian republic had 15 constructors on a resource without building any base on it. the torian constructors just waited outside lonley.
End of quote

That may be related to the rule of 3 starbase bug, which I'm fairly certain that I've fixed.

So there seems to be a little problem, not an earth shattering one but if you target a resource with a constructor (before it is built, just raw resource, NO starbase there)and an AI beats you to it and builds one, when your constructor gets there you are still given the option to upgrade the starbase, regardless of who owns it
End of quote

Do you have the save game before that turn to send to me?

RasterOps, I've taken note of your reports. The fonts are bit odd.  In Gal Civ 2, we're going to use truetype fonts instead of bitmap fonts, so it should look better.  It shouldn't take even a minute to submit the data.  What kind of connection do you have? Do you have any firewalls or add blockers running?  Do you have Paint Shop Pro 8 installed?

Icho tolot, could you maybe give more details? I'm not grasping what you're trying to say.

Aaron, have you tried using the in game mp3 player?

When I tried to reload the autosaves the tech screen that comes up from an autosave was blank, and the background that the stars/ships etc are normally on was all red. When I tried to click to the menu the game crashed again. *sigh* There goes several hours work and 40-60k Metaverse points.
End of quote

Did you try loading the previous auto save?

Anyone having problems with the tech sharing up issue, please see the sticky thread about it for instructions on how to fix it until the next patch goes up.

Cant down laod my cd, Pissed off something sbout I/O bad something something what ever this game seems all hype I cant believe I spent all this money and now I cant even load it....
End of quote

Did you try copying the files off the cd and then installing?  SF used some poor quality CDs in the first printing, so it's possible that you got one of those. However, you can download the entire game from stardock central or from the downloads page with the serial number in your box.  Then, if you have a burner, you can create your own backup cd.

Pj, please send the up issue file to me so that I can test with it? Thanks.

Yet another occasion of two ships occupying the same square. I was prompted "do you really want to move here and start a war?" I said no and my dreadnought was on top of the AI's stack. I have a save game and screenshot.
I'm not sure if this is a bug and I didn't save the game because I got wiped out shortly thereafter, but when the Torians and Altarians are the only races left, and they are allied, if the Altarians declare war on the humans, the Torians do so soon after (of course)! Then the Torians gift the humans with some of their "finest starships" (usually 2 corvettes and a battlecrusier). They then proceed to attack and destroy them. Once I was able to get the battlecrusier to one of my planets before it was destroyed. It just seems strange that an AI race you are war will gift you ships to help your war with their ally!

This could be somewhere in this 8-page thread, but I don't remember seeing a report. In my current gigantic map game ships on sector sweep stop at the corners of the sweep. Clicking "i" and "done" releases them, as does pressing "w". I have saved games, if useful.

Go ahead and send it to me. I'll need both the .sav file and the corresponding folder.

I'll take a look at that code to see if I can figure out what was going on with the war->gift ship thing.

The sector sweep code has always been a bit buggy. It's on my list to fix.

Since we are on the subject of reported bugs, I was playing a game late last night and had successfully built my first first Terror Star, (I know, big whoop), and then cruised over to the Drengin empire and laid waste to a star system, then got a peace treaty with them before their ally, and only other remaining player declared war on me, thereby eliminating my trade routes. I repeated the process a few more times, 'cause the graphic was kinda cool, and I just really didn't like the empire.
So onto the bug. Several new empires had their prescence declared, and a war was even declared against them. This wouldn't be so bad except for one problem, they never appeared on the map, and when the computer attacked them, since I was unable to even had I wanted to, the computer flew to and invaded a square with nothing in it. And I do mean nothing, I was unable to even click on it, it just wasn't there. (but the computer did when...)
I also had a planet defect to me, and although I was able to find it on my list of planets, I was unable to locate it on the map. All of this happened after I used the Terror Star.
Oh, and is building SB's directly next to each other a bug? I was reading in an earlier post here that there was supposed to be a "3 square radius between them" or something like that, but I've never had a problem packing them in a tight little group.

Would any government accept a deal which was going to bankrupt them?

I think we currently have a sitting president that would gladly bankrupt his country for his own political gain. But that's just my opinion...

I too am having a problem Loading my previous 1.12 Save Game after I updated to 1.13. I JUST got this game, and had NO IDEA that you couldn't Update while in the middle of a Campaign?!?! That's OBSURD! I'm an experienced gamer too, and have Never seen where Updating the core game can corrupt your Current Saved Games. This is a BIG Problem. What can I do to resolve this? Will a new patch fix this? Is there a converter? Will I EVER be able to go back to my Saved Game, or do I have to Start from scratch again? I've invested too much time into my current campaign to have to throw it all away. :-(

Whenever I try loading a previous save, as reported by another player, ALL of my techs seem to be WAY OFF! The Tech list includes choices I already researched AND stuff that I wasn't even able to see before! Then when I try to advance 1 turn, it brings up a victory screen and says I won by Technical Victory?!?!? VERY BIZZARE!

Is there NO WAY to remedy this??? I'd really hate to have to start over. My people NEED ME! hehehe

Please let me know what I can do to fix this problem.

Thanks,

Shambles10

I know what's causing the bug with the invisible stars.  I'll get that fixed.

I'm sorry that your save game got screwed up.  We generally try to keep the games compatible from version to version.  I think that in this case, a new programmer added new info to the save game format and forgot to add the code that would have kept the games compatible.

I am working on a new format for save games that is being tested in the Altarian Prophecy expansion pack that will consist of only one file and will hopefully be more robust.

When I play the game none of the minor races that appear during have symbols other than a sort of broken circle on a gray background. I'm not sure that this wasn't intended but it is really stupid that they don't. I mean how hard can making 2d nonanimated images for all the minors be.

I would explain why, but it would turn into a rant and I just don't have the energy for that today.

GoblinCookie, when voicing a complaint it's best to avoid words like "stupid". Especially if you want somebody to do something about it.

Thanks for the quick Reply CariElf! :-) I'm fine with the fact that there was a mistake with the new programmer (FIRE THAT PERSON!!! hhahaha J/K), but you never said if there was a potential FIX for the Save Game problem. Will I NEVER see my old Civ again??? Please let me know if this is fixable or whether I need to start over... :notsure:

Thanks!

David Ennis,

1st you said that I'll most likely have to start over, but then you said that CariElf sent you an E-mail with an executable Fix. Does the fix REALLY work? If so, then maybe CariElf could send me a fix too, and I'd be back in bidnizz! :-)

You're giving me a sense of hope!

CariElf...may I have that Save Game fix too Please? :SURPRISED: Do you need one of my Saved Games?

Any Help for my Update-Botched Saved Civ would be much appreciated...
