Bug Reports for 1.13

Bug Reports for 1.13

Please post bug reports here for version 1.13.

If you are asked to send a save game, I will need both the .sav file and the folder with the same name.  Zipping them usually works best.

My e-mail is carielf@stardock.com.

Please give detailed explanations on how to reproduce bugs.  More information is better than less.

If people start out reading this thread, there will be less repeat bug reports, and it will be easier for everyone to read this thread.

Thanks.

This seems to be my night.
Same game as #145 & 148.

1 enemy starbase on a resource. One mine 2 parsecs away. I destroy his base and send a constructor to grab the resource: I get the message about starbase limits :SURPRISED:
And in the same game there are starbases side by side everywhere (alien ones) :sniff!:

Later on

A new planet appears (UN event). Who should have it. I vote for me, and get it. A few turns later since they are about to defect to my enemy (it was in the heart of their space) I destroy the colony. 2 turns later I have a message telling me that the colony has flipped to the enemy :SURPRISED: it's kind of the return of the living dead!

Later on again

There is a terrorist event (in spite of the huge amounts I spent in spying). I get a message that I'm at war with the drengin, and that they are being supplied with weapons. Click ok. And 150-200 ships, mostly corvettes I think, appeared all over the map, between 3 to 10 per sector! :SURPRISED: Is this normal ?

I have many saves of this game and a few screenshots for documentation if necessary.

#149 by Veteran Maxtipherous - 12/30/2003 2:57:42 PM well, since 1.13 I can build starbases as close as I like in the same sector.
End of quote

How come I can't!
I don't understand that there are differences in the same version of the game. Is it possible that after sometime (I've just played several hours today) the computer somehow loses count, forget all the rules?

I can't embargo an ally? Hm... drats, I wanted to! >:(

And it's always a good sign when the bug thread gets unpinned- a new update coming soon!?!? :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT:

On the UP vote screen, if a vote comes up to share tech, the game freezes. This has happened on three separate occasions and I've only owned the game for a day. If I task switch out of the game, it shows that the game is using 99% of my CPU resources. I then have to end-task it.
Nastavnik -- can't speak to the other two, but the terrorist event sounds right. The little corvettes are all called Die Humans!, and they are basically cannon fodder. the AI will virtually never accept a piece offering in my experience. There is no relation to your espionage spending IMHO.

XopherMV - This was a bug introduced with the update to 1.13. There's a thread near the top of the list called "Tech Sharing UP Issues" which has a temporary solution to this problem post by StarDock's very own CariElf :) Just remember to back up the files before you replace them!
Nastavnik, you can build in this version 1.13 starbases one beside other except when there are resources, if you have 2 resources in less than 3 parsecs from each other you can build only 1 the other one can be build by the AI but no by you.

Thks for the info Seeker Master & Maxtipherous.
It just seemed weird that what existed before cannot be redone by me. And the fact that the computer had many side by side starbases. Specially the Arceans, who it seems still have problems optimizing their SB production.

And Maxtipherous, yes, I know for the terrorist event and the "Die Humans", it's just that there are so many and so spread through out the galaxy that it seemed strange. It looks like my minimap has chicken pox
;)

By the way, happy new year for you all guys.
Special mention for Frogboy, carielf & Co

Just had a "discovered precursor ship" event give the Yor a full 100 strong Corvette stack. Bug?
No, it's a normal event. I 've just asked the same thing when 150-200 corvettes appeared all over the galaxy (3-10 per sector :sniff!: ). It took some time but my overlords are almost done with the cleaning :)

In a game played in a previous version (dunno which), the Drengin's had a "discover precursor ship" event that gave them 34 Corvettes, so if it is a bug, it's been there for a while. At first I thought, 'hey, they got 3-4 corvettes, big deal'..I had previously in that same game gotten 3 Corvettes through the same kind of event, so I was very surprised when fleets of them took off to attack the Torians most likely. What's the maximum number of ships that may be obtained by a single precursor ship event? Are the probabilities weighted toward a particular range?

I made a list of bugs that I found in my last game.

1 - With my annual report it gave me the "Twilight of Humanity" message, saying that I was losing a war. It's "proof" that I was losing the war was that I had a combined ecomony and military of 180 while my opponent (the Arceans) had 138. Dunno why a message would register that I was losing the war when, in fact, its own calculations indicated I was winning.

(Incidentially, the Arceans went on to beg for peace when they had 3 systems left. I went into hysterics when I read their message about how sorry they were that the war had been accidently started by them and would I be willing to show them mercy? Very funny!)

2 - There is no music when negotiating with minor races. The regular music instantly cuts out. VERY (!!!) annoying. At the very least the regular game's background music should play. Or the regular music should fade out over a second or two into silence. The instant cut (and cut back when done negotiating) is very jarring.

On this point, I would also point out that it seems a waste to have various alien music themes that are only used during negotiation. Why not have them rotate through the music soundtrack with the 2-3 themes that are commonly used during the game? Then have them come "to the forefront" during negotiation with the alien. Just a thought.

3 - Annoyed with the music, I began playing music with Windows Media Player in the background. Sometimes though this caused some horrible feedback to occur. The WMP music worked fine, but the slightest sound from GalCiv would roar through my speakers like 500 decibal static. I found I had to quit both programs, load GalCiv, drop to windows and load/start WMP, and then go on with the game. Otherwise I'd be stuck with the horribly loud static.

4 - The "invisible" ship is very annoying. Would be nice if you eventually cleared it up. The first time I played the game I thought it was some sort of cloaking technology and didn't even know I had to restart the game to get rid of it. I found it highly annoying.

5 - Typo: In the "research completed" screen for many technologies. There are two spaces (should only be one) between "New" and "Improvements".

6 - During the game some proposals were coming up with the UP more than once. Would be nice if they didn't repeat until all the UP proposals had come up.

7 - Typo: When selecting ships to make obsolete, "Star Hawk" has two spaces between words instead of one.

8 - Typo: When collecting the anomoly that helps weaponry, it says it improves weaponry "by roughly" 1% with two spaces between those words in quotes.

9 - Typo: One of the techs (can't remember which--will try to find out next game) has two periods at the end of its text description.

10 - The Yor collective in my game had only 3 systems. When the fundamentalist event occured, all three evil systems defected. There was no "Yor is dead" screen. Bummer, but no biggie as they vanished from the diplomacy screen and were effectively dead. But later in the game the Yor suddenly got the "change of alignment" random event.

11 - When doing mass research for a technological victory, the options menu listed me as having 102% towards a technological victory. Odd that it can get above 100%, especially since I still had a while to go to actually win.

12 - During those "good, neutral, and evil" alignment-choice events, sometimes the neutral option actually has a worse penalty than the good one. For example, "good" might cause a small production penality. But the neutral event causes a greater production penalty.

The nature of those penalties suggest they have random ranges in which they can occur, but a line or two of code should be added so that if they cause the same type of penalty (production loss in this case) then the good-alignment penalty will always be greater.

That's all. Will post more bugs after my next game. In the meantime, please keep the twisted sense of humor in the game. It's great!

Not half as jarring as the Drengin theme relative to the others (I renamed the theme to get rid of it).
:p I suppose the mild pastoral theme for the Yor is amusing. One idea might be to have a single theme for all the minor races (in a minor key, of course). However, as with all other computer games I'll turn off the music very soon. -- HtL

OK now I had one (CTD).

Well these are just minor...

The Income Distribution lock images, when a game is reloaded, are remembered but their states are not. This means that an economic aspect (Social, etc.) will change when a different aspect is adjusted although the image indicates locked. Ya folla? :)

UP: Limit Starbase modules to 2, 4, 6 (8?), none. Well even the AI thinks this is stoopid. :notsure: Either remove this UP vote or make it more realistic as it is simply a waste of UP time. My suggestion is 10 (2 per classification), 25, unlimited.

What are the benfits of Ultra Spices? Where is this information recorded? Should I trade for it? Where is the Tech information for similar technologies?

Look at Domestic Policy. Select "Society". My name causes wrapping, which causes the statistics to become misaligned.

I know they only have Normal intelligence but must the AI litter the Galaxy with Starbases and individual ships? The Tactical screen is a mess!

Speaking of the Tactical map. On it a Space Shark is indicated as green. Impossible to locate on Tactical Map when Torians are present. Another color is needed for monsters.

This may have been mentioned. Right click on Excaliber from the Research panel (this tech has not been researched) and there is no description in the Tech Tree Viewer.

Planetary Details don't indicate its influence statistic.

There appears to be a 100M cap for all planets regardless of quality. This means that Gaia class planets will never have a morale problem. Whereas 21 or less quality WILL and there's nothing that can be done to prevent it. If there is an artificial cap it should be appropriately scaled per planet class. Why would the population on a Gaia class planet suddenly stop yet not affect its morale?

This is Normal? Evidently the AI knows that they will lose their Capital Planet and Star System on their next turn. They cancel all completed projects on one of the planets in this system instead of spending money on Propaganda to prevent the flip in the first place. How else do you explain a colony of over 70000M people and no completed social projects? Unless this is some kind of feigned attempt to regain their system by repeated flipping. There ought to be a law or a morale penalty for deliberately destroying a colony's means of support and survival as this is just criminal. (:(

More submission problems: Simply doesn't happen until I task switch and connect Stardock. Upon game completion and closing the game summary I see something like "select a valid username" (handle, nick, whatever). The Submission info also indicated the intelligence of the Drengin and Yor to be Normal whereas Bright was selected. The Submission screen did however indicate the game to be challenging.

Same lockup on the UP tech sharing. I have come across it now 4 times, I now know to save right before the UP vote.

Well, my latest game didn't go so well. Masochistic skill lever certainly is that!

I found a few more bugs. Typos, really. Mostly errors involving two spaces between words. That's a major pet peeve of mine and I hate it.

Typo: On the modify racial abilities menu at the start of the game. Two spaces in "military production."

Typo: On the modify racial abilities menu at the start of the game. Two spaces in "social production."

Typo: On the modify racial abilities menu at the start of the game. Two spaces in "hit points."

Typo: On the modify racial menus, any option for +1 pt says +1 pts. This should be singular, not plural. (No biggy, but I'm being thorough).

Typo: When you select an option for speed, it says + 2 (or whatever number) with a space in-between. The space is the standard for most values. There is no space when you select an option for trade though. Then its just +10. Perhaps because its two digits? Something to look into.

Typo: When selecting a political party, it says "war party" with two spaces in-between the words.

Typo: When selecting a technology to research, it says "medical theory" with two spaces.

Hope to have some real bugs for you next time. But most of these should be able to be cleared up with just a few moments of effort. Less typos makes your work look more professional and reflects better on your company and what you do.

I suppose I might have found some real bugs but my empire didn't last long. Once the Yor were ready to roll over my homeworld I gave up.

Well I'm a bit pissed off at the moment. I just spend around 4 hours playing a large/Maso/Abundant map, nearly to completion (and mil conquest victory), when the game crashed out on me. When I tried to reload the autosaves the tech screen that comes up from an autosave was blank, and the background that the stars/ships etc are normally on was all red. When I tried to click to the menu the game crashed again. *sigh* There goes several hours work and 40-60k Metaverse points.

If it's any help, I got a random event a couple of turns before the crash. It was the "something evil is happening at system x". The planet rebelled and formed a new minor the next turn. Two turns later the crash occured.

It's been that way since the old OS/2 versions. (They borrowed a lot of music from the old game - I thought it was a cool tribute to its roots.) I guess you could convert the Drengin's MP3 to a .wav file, open it up in a wave editor, normalize the volume to something less than what it is right now, save it, then re-conver it into an MP3, but I don't know what that would do to the quality of the music, though, sincer re-converting an MP3 isn't really the best thing to do. (Think of it this way - the original .wav file is like a document printed on paper. It's the original, and it's the best quality you're going to get. An MP3 is like using a copy machine to make a copy of the document - it's looks pretty good, but the quality isn't quite the same. Re-converting an MP3 would be like making a copy of the copy. The quality gets a little worse every time you do that.)

Running 1.13 patch, still in the 'mad expansion' rush to grab planets.

The Alexians minor power has expanded to 7 planets, just about as fast as I did. I thought this patch was supposed to .curb. the minors from expanding so much? The Kwalisians (which haven't morphed into the I-League yet) have a large fleet of colony ships wandering around as well (with nowhere to go, aww darn)

Save game available on request.

In my games they and the carinoids never get out of their home sector (maybe the carinoids did once)

I bet a lot of people have already said this, but the minor races, at low level standard opponents, seem to be the best races in the early game. They also always have a large number of 20+ planets, in like five systems, and i can only find a rare 20 in like 50 systems.
Just adding my input. Great game beside these minor flaws!

Starbase resource bug

I had two constructors autopilot on a research resource, timed so one would arrive before the other by a few turns. Constructor one arrived with no moves left right next to it, i noticed that three grid squares away in the same sector was a Drengin constructor. He didnt move quick enough and i gained the resource, no improvments, just the 5% you get for the basic starbase. The Drengin constructor was still on autopilot to the research resource, the next turn my other constructor arrived, i tried to upgrade the starbase but couldnt, why? the Drengin constructor had upgraded MY starbase and it now belonged to them.
That is obscure but IMO needs fixing (and with the map editor i should think it will be fairly easy to replicate?)

Thanks

Smegged:

The event that occured was the Draginol. I had a CTD on that event as well. I was able to get around it by invading the Draginol the same turn they appear. This CTD seems to have just appeared in 1.13.
