For people who have played both, what's the better game?

I can't personally say. Both are very different, play is different, strategies are VERY different...I love them both. I can say they are both MUCH better than MOO3!

I have played space empires for years and gal civ since it came out. SE4 is an incredibley deep game and if I could take only one to the desert island it would have to be se4. They have a demo, try it, and you will buy it....

I don't like the way SE-IV does the research. It takes forever!!! I like the multigalaxy option, but the construction part is quite bad, limiting th eplanets to just few options of what you can build it is not very good, the AI is also extremely agressive and it is real hard to get good relations with them, so bottom line I like GalCiv better. My ideal game would be a mix of Galciv with SE-IV and M003, the only thing I like about M003 is the option to infiltrate spies and steal things from other AI's.

I can't compare SEIV to GalCiv, they are both different and great for what they do.

I like the idea of unique tech streams chosen at setup that cost "ability points" in SEIV.
Though SEIV interface was usable, its not ideal for me either, meaning.... overall I prefer SEIII LOL.

I have played SEIII for years and have tried the SEIV demo for a few times. I liked the SEIII more of those two but that's another story. It's not easy to compare them to GalCiv since they are very different than GalCiv. I like to play both of them and can't really say which one is better but I can say that both are excellent.

Hard to say. I have both. I was playing SEIV gold for a while, got MoO3 (ugg), got galciv. I have not gone back to SEIVg yet. For enjoyment, both are fairly equal.
The thing I miss the most, is absent in both games (planetary conquest). I still like call to power, civ2, smac, deadlock.

SEIV is a great game, but as the others have said, very different from GalCiv. It got a lot of mentions in the MOO3 forum, along with GalCiv ;) I'd recommend the game personally :)

I still like SMAC, though it irks me they never fixed some of the most glaring bugs in that game (like the game crashing when your air superiority unit actually tries to defend your city)...

Ah well. I'll have to check out the SEIV demo. I'm house-sitting with no galciv this week so maybe that can keep me occupied in the meantime. :D

SEIV includes very nice features such as planet differences, ship design, races customisations, ...
But they failed completely as far as AI is concerned (the game is designed to be multiplayer).
Galciv is quite unique these days (i.e. not multiplayer). It ensures that the devs will have to keep the AI good enough.

And in that they have succeeded very well. :)

Multiplayer games tend to be too long and get boring really easy, I like GalCiv, it is the best I have seen so far.

Hmm I love multiplayer, my gaming became better as a result. Plus it adds change and get this.... social interaction ;) during a game. I like the randomness a human player can bring to a game. Guess it depends on a number of things. Plus I usually find a game goes quicker as its played until some one surrenders.

I once played Civ2 multiplayer with a friend of mine and it made a totally different game, we all wanted the same wonders, didn't trade techs until the wonder was built. Once I even borrowed a city from him, I had to give it back but only after all my units were upgraded :)

After playing some game for a while agains the AI you can almost guess what it is going to do next (well, depends on game of course). Against real human player there is the element of surprise as you can never surely know what he will try next (even if you have played many games against him).
