Travel to Realms Beyond Your Ordinary Gaming Experience

This thread is intended to recruit new players to the Realms Beyond community through our Metaverse Empire. We don't exactly need a thread for discussion, as we have our own GalCiv forum attached to the RB website. (Realms Beyond is a veteran community of gamers with an established presence in several strategy and role playing games). However, some have suggested that our "meteoric rise" in the galactic standings represents a "mystery" and a possible threat to other empires. Surely not, says we. :)

Why not wait for interested parties to find their way to the RBGC forum, if they wish to communicate with us? That seemed wise at first, but the suggestion has been floated amongst our own that we should research "communication theory" and create a device called a "univeral translator" and seek to open communications with other empires on terms they are used to operating, through channels they are used to using. The ultimate wisdom of this idea, and this so-called translation device, remains in doubt among RB leadership, as the first attempt to use the wicked thing resulted in misunderstanding leading to combat and nearly kicked off a minor war, but we are an adventurous people and will give almost any idea a try, so here we go. :D

Our Empire Motto: WE SEEK CHALLENGE THROUGH VARIETY!

http://www.galciv.com/metaverse/empires.asp?id=555

We seek mastery over the game. The ideal at RB is to be able to beat the game on any map size, without choosing to abuse the AI's various inanities, without having to have perfect terrain conditions. Any alignment, any victory condition, any habitability range, any political party, any combination of bonus picks. If a challenge lies before us, we will embrace it. Mistakes, setbacks and losses do not represent failure, merely a chance to learn, from which greater success can sprout and flourish.

No skill level is too high or too low for RB. All we ask is that you play your best and have a good time.

RB players venture beyond the ordinary. If you are like unto our brother in the spirit in which you play, you would be welcome to join our empire. All you need is interest, an RB-style gaming attitude, and the desire to participate. Our mission is to have fun, to pursue excellence, to play fairly, to uphold the integrity of the game, to embrace variety and challenge, push the boundaries of the game and gameplay, experiment, learn, grow, and do it together.

Our passion is the AAR. We live to read a good AAR and to write our own. Fun shared is fun doubled. The RB Epics tournament for Civ3 sees every participant post their own AAR after each tournament game, with the chief entertainment value being sharing insights, experiences, and laughs. Whether we will hold a GalCiv tournament remains to be seen, but the possibility is out there.

We keep a list of rules for our GalCiv gaming. This list will grow and evolve as the game evolves and our understanding of it matures. We voluntarily refrain from (in our opinions) game-breaking tactics that unbalance a game or pigeonhole it into one "best" path to victory. Some game elements may be broken or have loopholes. Some moves may just be "too strong" and kill variety. We do not use these moves. We do not have to use them. Mastery over a game is established by taking the high road, by trudging uphill and building our strength and endurance. Our interests lie in seeing the game refined to where the game balance provides extended replay value and neverending strategic challenge. However, unless and until that state of polish is reached, we will set our own boundaries to create this effect for ourselves, whether or not it can be found in the game as currently programmed.

If this sounds like your kind of gaming community, we invite you to travel to Realms Beyond.

Our forum for Galactic Civilizations:

http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/237344

Players interested in joining Realms Beyond should venture to our forum, read the lastest version of our rules, and confirm their assent to abide by the rules we have set. We place the quality of our gaming experience ahead of our standing in the competition. Excellence brings its own rewards, its own forms of recognition and respect from peers. That is something no measurement or score could ever fully depict.

Anyone who agrees to our playing philisophy and signs their John Hancock pledging their allegiance to our posted rule set will be confirmed onto our roster. Come one, come all, for the time of your life. LOL Our star is rising. Our destiny is written in the heavens. :HOT:

We are also hoping to generate enough excitement to lure out some of the other RB players who have yet to pick up GalCiv. Surely when they see the grand party we are staging at our best starbase, some will be compelled to join in. And as far as "threat to other empires", that's purely propaganda. We have no hostile intentions. Now if some players are impressed with our culture and decide to emigrate to our worlds, that would not constitute hostile action against other cultures on our behalf. ;) We cannot help but to be ourselves. :D

No, just the opposite. On Maso, the majors will not pay cash for anything. Most of the minors won't either. My anomalous game was a tiny map with both minors buying.

Maso players should be safe if they sell only to Alexians. They should also be safe on bigger maps, unless they meet all the minors early and several are buying.

Any level below Maso, though, all civs will buy, and it's very easy for vet players to accumulate huge bankrolls, starting very quickly. Damoose, from CSF, has had two zero (anomalous) games in his last three. That's got to be due to tech sales, unless he's using some wild mods.

I ran into the huge cash flow in my last two games, but not the anomalous flag... does it change with difficulty level? I.e. the higher the difficulty the less tolerant of the exploit?
End of quote

Walker: If you're asking if the FLAG itself is more sensitive depending on the difficulty level, no one knows - the exact conditions that trigger it under any conditions are a closely-guarded secret.

Sirian correctly points out that with the majors' (and some minors') resistance to parting with cash on Maso games, the conditions that cause the flag are less likely to appear.

Carielf has said that the flag is triggered if the treasury hits a certain level by a certain year. After that year, you can go nuts with the treasury and the game won't flag it, as far as I can tell.

To test this, I've gotten several tens of millions of BCs in the late game by exploiting the Draginol, and still gotten a successful submit.

Thanks again. I noted that smarter AIs (I played my last game with mixed AI Intelligence) tend to pay significantly less as well and be more reluctant about buying. Btw. Ben got it right, I was asking about the FLAG sensitivity, the Maso bit, I've picked up on from reading around. The reason for asking that is that I still have a couple of stages before I even start thinking about Maso, and need to know if I need to be more careful as I move up in difficulty.

Vincible - I think the way Carielf stated it, it seemed like a series of flags. I.e. x amount by year y, z amount by year y+r etc. but don't take my word for it that just seemed the more comprehensive solution as just one flag amount/year seems to me to be not enough.

These Canadian types know how to put up a fight. Of course, RB has known that all along, since several of our members hail from up north. Still, for an empire that sat around rotting and giving off foul odors, they sure know how to mobilize then they set their minds to it! :D

Both of my latest submissions have retaken our sixth place lead, after the CSF took it back. You gotta love a sporting event with lots of lead changes. :D

Quick Q

What does it take to kick your Metaverse score over 20K. I know I won't be going to Maso soon, but I've set an interim goal at 20K.
My last game at Painful was a big jump for me and without the cheese Diplo picks it would have been alot harder, possibly a loss.

Move up to crippling, military conquest on a large map or alliance victory on a huge map, but not before building most of the trade goods and wonders, and preferably after reaching beyond human in the tech tree.

Edit: Oh and a military conquest on painful gigantic might be enough for 20k too.

Hey now. No pressing me into service wearing drag. I might be able to fit into a dress, mind you, but there is no way I'm shaving my mustache, not even to garner laughs. :D

http://sirian.warpcore.org/professional/bob.jpg

That's me, by the way, at a LAN party near Pittsburgh in 1999. :) I was parked in front of the same keyboard there that I'm sitting at now, and there were nearly a dozen people packed into a garage with twelve computers networked, everybody playing Descent. :D Ah, those were good times. :HOT: There's nothing quite as good in gaming as Descent on LAN.

Oh, and lose the adverbs. "Gasps" is good. "Gasps climactically" is dime-store-novel cheesy. You don't want to hear what I have to say about "roars libidinously". Trust me on that. Never mistake adverbs for good writing. So sayeth a writer. :)

By the by, the GROSS pirates already ran through here with the "stick em up" routine. We dragged the poor bloke down into the cellar and gave him a once over. If you want to lump us in with the oppressors, fine, but be careful what you wish for. We may, after all, be capable of oppressing. LOL

Thanks for noticing. :) Figured it's about time the rest of us folks started to augment the Jaxom/Sirian show. We wouldn't want you to do ALL the heavy lifting, now would we. ;p

Smegged will be @100k soon, too.

100k is now here. Couldn't resist trying a tiny maso--two hour smackdown. I think small and medium will be harder--it's too easy to get the trade routes up with a tiny map. Nice break from the alliance wins (aka, bribe, steal, and prey to cover up bad openings). I still can't believe I was able to bribe my way to one of those--over 30k and all my starbases. That was the game that introduced me to the "Losing" theme. LOL Now to beat maso with the Pacifists and Populists, and to use culture and beyond human on maso. Back to the games! Maybe even an RB-worthy AAR, if I find a varient-like game that has a good story...

Wowsers,

no RB action for over 24 hours. Everyone must be too busy watching the cricket :). Too bad Australia got beaten by those evil Indians!

That would be my fault. Your continued activity and participation on the Forums have made your persona eligible for character assassination and other lighthearted fun. Truly, to live in prose is a form of immortality.

Coming soon: the Sirian action figure, complete with cape and illuminated logo!

Participate in this crazy community at your peril! Or something similar...(hic) ;)

I thought you were the only Aussie in the bunch, Smegged! Mmm...blasted Indians (and for our American viewers, they're the ones from the sub-continent, not the ones on reservations ;) ) but they deserved the win (Brett Lee 1-83 off 10 overs!!!).

Um...I also accept some reponsibility for using Sirian in the Jedi story :SURPRISED: Feel free to return the favour! ;)

I don't know if there are any other Aussies in the empire--I thought Smegged was it, too. As for picking on Sirian in the Jedi tale--looks like all done in good taste (and funny, too). Only thing that would worry me is that our esteemed Emperor happens to earn his living by creations of pen and keyboard! ;p
