Stabbed by the Politicians at home!

There I was, happily building forces for the big push against the last enemy race (the Altarians). I had a Death Star within two moves of their main planet, all was proceeding according to plan. Suddenly, BAM! Alliance victory. Not so much as a "by your leave". I was not allied with these guys, and we'd been the only two left in the galaxy for some time. What gives?

Edit: Now this is odd. I've just checked the Endgamesave again and I'm showing up as allied on the Diplomacy screen. I had indeed been allied once, but had failed to aid them in a war. They informed me that this would mean the end of the alliance. I always assumed that failing to come to your allies aid automatically ended alliances, is this not so? Also, we'd been the only races around for ages without the game ending. Doesn't alliance victory happen straight away when only allied players remain in the game? Will one of you kind souls help out a poor perplexed megalomaniac who feels cheated of his evening genocide?

Sounds like the game thought you WERE allied...The alliance victory condition only kicks in:

If you're at peace with all remaining majors, AND
If your're allied with all remaining majors, AND
None of them are shooting at each other (I'm not sure if they have to be allied with each other...)

Damn, you people are good! Thank you, Obi Wan, you were so quick I was still editing my first message. Any thoughts on the updated problem?
