does it matter where my lil trade ships move ...

... or is it only important where the trade route allegedly is on the trade screen?

cause that seems to differ from time to time.

im asking because of the trade bases i wish to place along my tradin line.

thx in advance for any help :)

You want to place your trade bases in the sectors that your mini-freighters move through.

Note, though, that for a diagonal route, the freighters move in a rhombus-shaped pattern, since the default move method for an autopilot ship is always to move diagonally first. This is explained in good detail in some other thread that I can't find right now, but it's the main reason why people prefer a trade route that is either vertically or horizontally aligned. Basically, though, if the route starts in 1,1 and finishes in 2,4 then the ship will go out 1,1->2,2->2,3->2,4 and it will come back 2,4->1,3->1,2->1,1. So only in the first and last sectors will it actually be in the same sector during both halves of its journey.

that is very ineffective, isnt it.
this would indeed mean that any trade route should be horizontal or vertical.

thx alot for your help.

So, you only get the starbase trade bonus while the little buggers are in the sector? I thought it just upgraded the route in general by a percentage. So, putting an economically upgraded starbase in the same sector as your trade planet is a bad idea because trade ships don't travel through the entire sector, but stop and start at the planet. Have I got the idea right?

Yes. On the other hand, if many of your trade routes start at the same system, then an upgraded starbase in that sector can make sense because you'll frequently have at least one freighter in the sector.

No, Just the opposite. If the friehgers start, stop, or pass through the sector you get credit.

Weyrleader is right on.. (Of course ;) ) I use starbases for all my trade routes placing them at the start and the end, sometimes inbetween. I use starbases for this purpose rather then simmply to build up culture.

I always thought that the starbase trade bonus should be based on the distance to the mini-frieghter, rather than requiring them to be in the same sector. Of course, the value of bonuses would need to be adjusted for this to still be balanced.
