Long Lasting Games

First of all I want to say that I love GalCiv ;) , but my games usually don't last all that long. The farthest I ususally get is Battleship and Dreadnought. Because either I kick ass or I get ass kicked. It's still fun, but I like to know a good way to stay alive to find new ships to master the galaxy with. After all it could be operator factor.

Thats a good question!

It seems cruel but leaving one or two of your enemies colonies to survive in an out of the way place can give you the time you need to tech' all the way to Beyond Human.

Also sometimes you can have a Close relationship with another civilization without giving them an Alliance and just let them hang around. Being careful not to culture flip thier colonies can sometimes be a bit tricky.

Well I'm getting a little flustered lately, my games have only been lasting about 20 minutes before I'm on the verge of getting killed. This isn't the way to do it, and I don't want to back down levels but I may have to.

Dark,

Maybe you want to give us more details on how you play and let some of the vets on the board give you some advice.

If you play larger maps, then the game will generally last longer and you'll get deeper into the tech tree.

Anything else depends on the specifics of how you play. As Ray said, it would be helpful if you posted that.

Maybe you simply don't have enough experience to play successfully at the difficulty level you are playing at? It's not a reflection on you, it just means you haven't been playing long enough to have sufficient practice and accumulated experience with the game's foibles. Try playing on a larger map, where the other AIs are farther away from you and you have more time to develop. You might also consider restarting until the game gives you a PQ 20+ planet for Earth. If that doesn't work, try stepping down to the next one down. If it suddenly goes from "way too hard" to "way too easy," then I don't know what to tell you except to petition for more intermediate grades of difficulty.

Play larger maps and set 1 or 2 races to a higher level. Maybe Torian or Yor, since they generally get eliminated early in the game.

or

Set all alignments to evil and keep the level same.

Gigantic maps even at an easy level can take some time. You may not go beyond human, but most definitely dreadnaught and maybe overlord classes.

Well, I don't know if I could describe my game play its the basics, expand with colonies, trade, and dominate, just like everyone else. But this might be a good time to mention that either way I still love GalCiv. It could be that I'm trying a little too hard, try an easier level and go from there. It's something to try.

Thanks,

Dave

I posted more or less the same question, and the suggestion I received seems to work for me: have more habitable planets.

I went from rare to common and my games last further into the tech tree now.

Abundant is too much micro management in my book...

Damn you guys......
When I posted the " King of The Losers" Thread you guys mocked me and then turned it into a discussion about grammer......

But anyway don't worry Dark you're not alone... if you need some encourgement check out bimbo15's score in the metaverse.

Cheers,

Or at mine... and yes, that can be of some relief. But not everyone posts their defeats.
I do (most of the times).
(looking at my score and suddenly feeling stupid)

I changed size to large and the first game I won Cultural Victory, but the second was Military. I got to use the Terror Star, man was that fun.

Hey Dark - just wanted to be sure about something. Are you doing the land grab thing - run military production up to 100% and grabbing all the planets you can? Then settle back to 50% research and 50% econ? It's a tactic I've seen described here and it works for me in the lower level games.

That's interesting, I usually don't mess with those, but it would have helped in the latest game I played. Thanks.
