can anyone explain how PQ improvements work and why?

okay, another newbie question...

On a 20 point base planet quality system (I know it goes higher than 20, but the manual only shows from 1 to 20), 10% improvement equals a jump of 2 points in PQ, but when I build soil improvement and habitat improvement, each raises the PQ by 1 point. For some reason I don't seem to grasp the math behind that. Can anyone explain the calculation involved?

Sounds like a bug, when I build PQ improvements, they work as stated. You may want to zip up the saved game and send it to Stardock.

No, I think my reasoning was faulty now. I was assuming a base range of 20 and you would get 10% of 20 for an improvement of 2. But that's not how it is. Say you colonize a pq 15 planet and then build soil enhancement, you would then get a benefit of 10% of 15 = 1.5 which most likely gets rounded down to 1. Then say you build habitat improvement for another benefit of 10% = 1.6 which again probably gets rounded down. hmmmm.... too bad the decimals don't carry over and become cumulative....so asumming a cumulative 20% of 15 PQ would equal a 3 point improvement. Wishful thinking on my part, me thinks. Anyone know if I got the calculation correct? :notsure: :)

Class 15 planets do become class 18 with soil enrichment and habitat improvement. I believe that the way it works is that each PQ improvement adds to the planet's PQ bonus stat and when that changes PQ is recalculated from the base PQ with decimals dropped.

Thus for a class 15, with +10 PQ it is 16.5 rounded down to 16 and with +20 it is is exactly 18.

Hm, I thought the number is only rounded down after all benefits have been added...the calculation doesn´t make a difference between PQ 15 and 24 though...
Btw, a complete and useful table about PQ ability and its modifiers can be found in this thread: http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=78384

It looks like the fractional part of PQ is only dropped at the end of the calc. I thought it was dropped after each bonus adjustment.
I must have been smokin' oisatsana :D

Thanks for the info :)

I could be wrong in the above post, as I was just doing some more calcs to verify the table in the link kindly posted above. My formula must be wrong or something. :notsure:
I'm doing PQ 15 x 1.1 x 1.1 = 18 and that comes out correct for hab improvement, but when I do
PQ 19 x 1.1 x 1.1 X 1.05 = 24 for hab improvement with 5% bonus pick and it doesn't match the table value of 23.
Well, I guess I'll just find a way to cut and paste that table and print it out for reference.
At any rate I don't think I ought to be reducing my galciv strategy to calcs...kinda takes some of the fun away. ;)
It would be sort of interesting, though, to know the correct formula if anyone knows it.

Uh, Miles, you are using compounded scores. It is not. It is simple adds. +10 and +10 equals +20. And the decimals do drop. A +5 PQ pick with those two improvements would equal a simple +25 add with a truncated decimal point.

End of quote

I remember a thread where the formula was posted(not by a developer) and discussed. I think the main topic was a rant about the PQ ability nerf coming with the 1.03 version - but as I don´t know the topic name, I wasn´t able to find it...

Gerakken:

Thanks for explaining that. PQ bonuses make more sense now that I can do the calculation.
;)

Galaxor:

Gerakken explained everything. The calc is simple:
suppose PQ 19 planet with 5% bonus pick and both soil and habitat improvement, then the total bonus is +25, so the math goes like this for example:

PQ 19 x 1.25 = 23.75, but then drop the decimal part to get a result of 23.

If it were the same PQ with only soil enrichment and 5% bonus pick, the math would be:

PQ 19 x 1.15 = 21.85, and again drop the decimal to get 21 (it's 20 without 5% bonus pick for comparison).
:SURPRISED: :)
