Underdogs is great source of abandoned games, however, due to their volume they have problems keeping all the games simply to install and all that. That "many-rars-in-rar system" is quite common over there, it was to help people recover partially downloaded files (esp. longer ones).

You might want to try Fallout Tactics, another squad based game. Most people forget about it,but it was actually really decent, and now it's only 19.99.

The UnderDogs DL of SpellCross seems to be missing all FMV. Too bad. Think I may e-mail the company in the UK and see if they have any old stoc on that title, I would happily pay for it.

My old computer (windows 98) ran it okay, but I am having no luck with XP.

i got X-com terror from the deep to run on Win2000Pro, but the game was running way too fast. by the time you move your mouse over to command a sub to intercept a sub, the sub is long gone. i dont recalling the game crashing or anything, it was just the speed of the gameplay, and i couldnt get any sound ether.

anyone ever tried that hex-editer cheat for the first 2 X-coms? the one where you can go into your saved games and give yourself 255 plasma cannons, and then go into the soilder stats and give them 255 speed, 255 accuracy and 255 psi ability? that editor was hilarious! i could get one soilder to scout out the entire map in 3 turns, and then get the other soilders to mind control every single alien the scout soilder sees!

I've gotten XCOM and TFTD to 'work' on XP out of the box, but no sound My POS soundcard SB Live doesn't even have DOS drivers. What were they thinking? So w/o sound it's not all that fun. Also scrolling is a real problem. You can use the program moslo to slow it way down. Also i couldn't execute the main.exe file, I had to use go.com, which launches the game itself. You can get the version 1.2 patch which removes copy protection. Good luck! Wish i could fix the sound, but no joy. Even on WinME. Oh, and a big Oh, the game crashes when I do an alien base assault. So i got stuck there. The game also randomly crashes at certain tactical battle scenes, so just save alot. May try my p100 laptop and see if i can get it to run on that.

Regarding winning the thing, getting money is fairly straigthtforward; research medikit and then laser cannon as soon as possible, and manufacturer these all the time. You can then sell them for a nice profit. LC will generate somethink like 2-3 million/month net. Find the FAQ floating on the web. It's huge.

that underdog site that everyone is talking about, what is it supposed to be? can you download free games on it or is it just reviews? i tried checking the site out, but &*$^ #@*%!!! i never seen so many pop-ups in my life! i checked the site out for a minute only and i then gave up! im not going to bother going there again unless there really is something worthwhile to download there.

They provide download links to abandoned titles, while provide links to online stores that are still selling the game. Just because a game is listed does not mean that it is automatically available for download - especially the later games that finally get released on one or more CDs.

All games listed have either a description or a review. Sometimes, the review isn't all that accurrate, especially when it comes to "Total Annihilation: Kingdoms." Even if that game isn't all that great, the reviewer shows his complete ignorange about the game by making such absurd statements like Zhon not having long range weaponry. I've pointed out the fact, as well as some other double standards in his review.

Underdogs is a site with most of the games available for FREE download. Once in a while you get one that doesnt download correctly or is missing some files (Spellcross for example.) Pop ups are annoying but on aol 8.0 there is a pop up reducer....some pop ups get thru but most do not. If you dont use aol or dont have a pop up reducer and cant deal with the pop ups, even for FREE games, dont go there.
Reviews? I dont give a rats butt for the reviews. Who cares about em, accurate or not? The games are FREE. If you dont like the game after downloading, delete it and move on. It costs you nothing but a little time.
Underdogs is a great place to get some of the older games that cant be found anymore.

Ahh X-Com. I wish the good old days of turn based strategy games would return.

i liked the chess like feel of X-com. the grided combat environment and the turn based play made me fall in love with the game. im not really crazy about chess, but X-com was a fun game of chess for me.

im not too sure if i will like UFO:Defense because of this. im thinking that the more realistic environment combined with the more real-time game play might not appeal to me like the chess-like gameplay qualities of X-com. dont get me wrong, im still very interested in the game, i do look forward to owning it someday.
