In that case, try Blender. It's a good 3D program.

They're only as good as their operator.
Some will fool you into believing you have created something new, clever and original, but trust me, you won't have.
Despite certain claims to the contrary, Photoshop is not just a red-eye touch up photo program....it can do anything you put your mind to.
3D modelling on the other hand will require dedicated proggies such as AutoCAD, Maya, and a squillion others.
Bryce, Terragen, etc are more within the realm of 'toy' applications.....and it takes yet more 'talent' to bypass the 'click-and-giggle' instant gratification and actually make something truly creative....
Yes, Blender is totally free. It might take some time to learn - or maybe not depending on yourself. XenoDreams is another and since you mentioned the fractal program, Apophysis, you might wanna give Ultra Fractal a try. (I think version 2 might be a free download)
Maybe what you need is a mix of things. Many use more than one program.
