The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Ric, I am halfway through a tough, large game on the new version, and I like the changes. Don't really see any reason not to upgrade.

On the name change, I agree with Matthew;
"Fellowship" or "The Fellowship" would be perfectly safe, but would still refer to our group in all it's glorified silliness.

Happy gaming.

Hmm... I submitted my first game in over a month. It was worth 17,000 points. My metaverse score went from 77,000 to 102,000. This doesn't make sense to me--any thoughts?

Was going to do a calc for Berserk first but since you are in the Fellowship, you get priority. :)

It works out. Before you submitted your last game, you have 12 games in your current block, 4 games one month old and 2 games two months old. After submission, you have 1 game in your current block, 6 games two months old, 8 games three months old and 4 games four months old.

You grew one block and your games are spread out better over the 4 blocks.

The hobbit stood quietly in the shadows of the side hall, his shifty eyes constantly scanning for danger. A wicked looking short sword hung loosely by his side, a weapon fashioned for backstabbing rather than frontal attacks.

“Tell me about the Pukes.” Evil Ray played with the strands of his white beard, his eyes fixated on the hobbit.

“They are a bunch of roughnecks, swindlers and goons. They were originally pirates but they were all made to walk the plank after they were beat up by merchants onboard a galleon. They managed to escape with their lives from shark-infested waters because one of them could speak Shark.”

“This motley bunch then moved in a big way into the village of Bree, booting out the beggars and the child-thieves. They thought they had seize control of the village underworld and was celebrating their dominance when the Evils showed up.”

“The Evils?” Ray’s attention was caught.

“A strange cult that emerged recently. They claim to follow a demi-god known as the Draginol. No one knew exactly how the cult originated but rumor has it that each member received their calling from a strange vision in their sleep. This order operates in complete secrecy as knowledge of their identity usually spells death. And oh, they dress exclusively in black robes when they are about. They are all male, though I hear they had female members before.”

“The two groups collided like two pissed drunkards. It was a bloodbath as they tried to assassinate each other’s members. Both failed miserably, bathing themselves in their own blood. Not surprisingly considering their amateurish skills.” The hobbit chuckled, his fingers caressing his short sword.

Ray rose from his tseat as he regarded the hobbit.

“Why are you telling me this, Dark? What is it going to cost me?”

“This first information is free, Ray. I have a personal score to settle with the Pukes.” Dark’s eyes turned hard as his mind flashed back to images of being tossed around by several laughing men.

“But all other information or assignments will cost you pure gold.”

“That’s fair, Dark,” Ray smiled benignly. “I need you to find out more about the Pukes and the Evils. Their strengths and weaknesses. All the dirt about them that would give the Fellowship an edge when we move in to dominate them all. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA….”

Dark’s blood chilled at the sight of an old wizard rolling over the floor in mirth.

Gigantic's definitely slower, lag wise. Takes me about 6 seconds to move to the next turn as opposed to the 2-3 secs under previous versions. I think the Massive map size that we may see in the premium xpack is going to be a clunker for me.

I haven't submitted for a while, but I haven't stopped playing. Saving up submissions for the next block, since I'll never play as many at one time as in my first one . . . which also means I can't start on the expansion for a few more days.

Ray thanks for the link to the blog and your discussion of starbases. Theoden congrats on being promoted to veteran. You deserve it.

Thanks everyone for the comments regarding the upgrade to 1.1. I finally took the plunge and immediately ran into the double-click survery ship CTD bug. I spent part of the day making sure the CTD was reproduceable (got really good re-booting my computer LOL). Then I winzipped the save game folder with the smart exception files and shipped it off to Cari. She reponded yesterday saying they know about it and will get a fix for it soon (maybe today or this week?). I should have gone back to forum because when I was nearlly asleep last night, I thought "Doh!!! I can just use the A key". Of course if I would have gone immediately to the forum I would have found out sooner. LOL.

In the new game those sharks are everywhere in the beginning. I had 5 chasing me around before anyone got to corvettes. They ate 3 enemy starbases but I didn't have any SB yet so I just let them wonder around. But they get stronger (Doh!!! again LOL).

Finally I decided to confront them with frigates and find out what this Death Knight ship was. Then maybe I wouldn't have to worry about sharks decimating my corvettes that were keeping me militarily superior against the hostile pure evil AIs or lose my USS Hero to the space version of the great white shark. And heck, I might get lucky and trip over a resource someday and didn't want my SB to end up as a shark appetizer.

There is no fleet bug in 1.1 so I lost 2 or 3 frigates against each shark but I did learn the high-maintenance Death Knight is a good shark killer at least early in the game. Those sharks certainly add a little zest to the early game. Oh no, the green asteroids!!! It was hard for me to control the sharks with my scouts. I would fly circles around them to get their attention but it didn't work very often. I was able to get the sharks to destroy 3 AI SB by getting the sharks to chase scouts but it doesn't always work.

The game was a lot longer than normal because of the survery ship bug and all the sharks and checking out the new ship but the tech at the end seemed to have less turns required. I also waited too long to get a war started and the Torians and Arceans got really chummy and wouldn't fight so that took longer. The scoring on 1.1 compared to 1.05 seems pretty similar for a large/tough. Anyway that is my take on 1.1 for the moment.

And . . . congrats to our new member TheJackal22, congrats to vincible on submitting a game. That 1.1 maso scoring should help out when you can get it downloaded. There has been a real upswing in the number of persons playing maso and some major shifts in the top 10 and top 25. Congrats again to you maso players.

But mostly, FOTR is back in second place so we need some game submissions of any difficulty level or score. Thanks everyone. :)

There is now a new patch at stardock to fix the double-click survey ship bug. I just downloaded it but haven't tried it yet.

Later . . .

I don't think that was ever really seriously considered vincible. I think we were alot more gung-ho about it than the devs.

You are. Once you figure it out you'll hit yourself over the head. Post your email in the G.R.O.S.S. thread if you want the hint. I won't post a spoiler here.

Finished another 1.1 and the survey ship CTD is no longer a problem with the new patch.

1.1 is harder for me. Because of the sharks hatching from anomalies, the bloom is off the rose concerning auto-survey. I finally lost my Hero to a shark after escaping several times through speed and luck (on auto-survey). I didn't auto-survey again until I got a ranger. The mid game sharks can stomp a Death Knight too so beware. I guess the answer is to manually survey if want to keep the Hero in one piece but that is a little labor intensive after getting spoiled by the auto-survey in 1.05, so the game seems harder.

The Torian got planet events and Telenanth today so I had to come from behind but it is hard to blame that on 1.1 but the score dipped about 1k or more. I rarely use rally points so can't comment there. The Death Knight is a good ship coming with the same technology as combat transports (battleship). The extra techs are fun and it seems like the end game techs require less turns to complete (is that correct?) , which is good.

I guess I can start destroying colonies now without worrying about the CTD bug but I haven't tried that. Has anyone? It is a cheap way to extend range.

Thanks for everyone who submitted a game. FOTR is now in first place again. Congrats to vincible for 100K. Super Duper!!! Talk to you later . . . :)

My last two submissions were old games that I played while my modem was down. I submitted them on my girlfriend's computer, which has a working modem. I had two more, but for some reason they wouldn't submit :/ Better than anomalous I suppose.

I downloaded 1.10 to her computer this morning and will give it a try tonight or tomorrow.

Taking a small break from GalCiv for a few days. After a recent LAN party, Diablo 2 got it's dirty little hooks into me again. ;)
See you all in a few days ... well, I hope it will only be a few days. :D

surther, check out the Maso Strats thread in the Strategy forum for tips on beating Maso. All the good stuff have been published there for months already.

Rick, looking around at others' scores, it would seem that all difficulty levels up to Painful have slightly lower scores in 1.1. Only Crippling and Maso are upped. Why don't you considering moving up the difficulties? You seem to have Tough down pat.

vincible, go for it. Let me know what you think about 1.1.

Lothmorg, good to take a break from the game now and again. Get back here soon and put in a few Maso games. :)

"Nice place you have here, Ray.h The hobbit moved about the dungeon chamber, admiring the various apparatus of torture. He shuddered as he passed the Foot Tickler, one, as a hobbit, he hated the most.

gHowfs the spying mission coming along, Dark? I know itfs only been a day.h Ray eased into a comfortable chair, built specially for the viewing of the spectacles performed by the Chief Torturer.

gYou underestimate me, Ray. Ifve already accomplished a key part of my mission. It was much easier than I thought.h

DarkHobbitfs wrist flicked out and a small, slim piece of wood spun towards Ray.

Rayfs eyes narrowed just so slightly and the wood piece came to a bobbling halt before his eyes, suspended in the air.

gI have gotten key information on the leader of the Pukes. His name is Winer and there is a drawing of him on the wood piece.h

gWhiner?h Ray asked as he scrutinized the picture before him.

gNo, Winer. He got that name from an apparent weakness for wine. And it seems that alcohol makes him weak in the mind.h

gYes, even a Wizard sometimes indulges in strong drink and pays the price.h Ray nodded wisely.

gProblem is Ray, this Winer never stops drinking.h

gHmmm, it looks like Winer is bald, has beady eyes, a needle nose, a line for his mouth and I must say the scrawniest looking pair of arms and legs Ifve ever seen. I have apprentices with more meat than this fellow! And hefs the leader of the Pukes? Ha!h

gThatfs a stick figure drawing, Ray.h

The piece of wood ignited in a burst of flame before Darkfs eyes.

gAre you trying to make a fool out of me, Dark? This is a dangerous game you are playing.h Rayfs words took on a menacing tone.

gWell you hired a spy, not a bloody elf artist. Anyway, you didnft have to pay extra for that picture, itfs a freebie I give to my clients to keep them loyal.h

gWhat else did you find out about him?h

gHis main offensive capability is his mouth. His two main attacks are the Cuss and the Puke. The Cuss attack basically attempts to enrage his opponents so much that they fall over and impale themselves on their own weapons to get to him. If that doesnft work, he uses his Puke attack to nauseate them into fleeing from him.h

gHe has a special attack reserved for times when his opponents beat him into a pulp, and that happens often. He uses his Wail attack just when his opponents are on top of his prostrate body. Itfs effect is that not unlike that a Banshee, seeking to drive foes insane. Itfs not very effective though, and it usually provokes his opponents to kick him a couple more times in this face.h

gThatfs why his face is so flat.h Ray nodded wisely.

gI said it was a stick drawing, Ray.h

gOh, yeah. Did you manage to find out their plans?h

gYes, I infiltrated their base and was hiding in the shadows, squatting behind the chair where Winer sat. They are discussing their plans to assault the Fellowship.h

gWinerfs plan is to walk up the Fellowship Halls and challenge you to a magical duel, one-on-one.h

gWhat! You didnft say Winerfs a mage.h

gHe isnft, Ray. But he thinks your magic is pretty much the same as how he makes a childfs candy bar disappear into his mouth while they are not looking.h

gAll the Pukes fear Winer. He hates being corrected and when he is mad, he pukes all over, nauseating everyone. One of his men however was brave enough to try to dissuade him from this foolish course of action. He reminded Winer that you could turn him into a pussy cat with absolute ease.h

gWiner then said something quite profound. He said the only two reasons why you are better than him are that you can cast better magic and that you are more dedicated to your craft. If it were not for that, he would have been the better mage.h

gVery profound, indeed.h Ray nodded wisely. gI mustnft underestimate this foe. Are you sure itfs him who said it and not one of his lackeys?h

gItfs him, Ray. None of the others have his unique intelligence.h

gI also saw something very interesting. One of Winerfs men is a triple-agent. His name is Bat and Ifve seen him when he was in the Fellowship Jail. He works for two other organisations, one of which is the Evils.h

gExcellent, Dark. Continue with your mission. Youfve earned yourself an advance of two bags of gold.h

Ray turned around with a smile and noticed that Dark was gone.
