The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Damn, and I thought it would be a pirate...

Well, our little thread is just growing and growing! Thanks, Evil Steve for getting us there!

Evil Ray emerges when the Wanderer doesn't get to play Maso games or beat Crippling in his sleep.

Life should return to normal once the beta is out.

Till then...

Fellowship News - Sports Report

There was drama at the racetrack today during the running of the Fellowship Fifteen-Hundred. Both runners made it across the line at the exact same time, but Evil Steve was announced as the winner without any debate. Sources report that Ray's bribe this year was inadequate, as he was supposed to pay tribute based on his gross, not net, income, and he was claiming too many diplomatic priviledges on his income tax. Also, Evil Steve has admitted to taking mind-altering drugs when they're decades past the expiry date, but no protest was lodged by Ray's trainer. Suspicion continues to grow, and after Steve's victory speech, some people are suggesting he should have been entered in the handicap division, as a raving lunatic.

Many racing fans have also been asking the developers to implement milli-second timing on forum posts to resolve photo-finish conflicts such as this in the future. A Stardock spokesman, speaking under condition of anonymity, said "Maybe if you upgrade to Drengin.net."

Meanwhile, the first book-making service dedicated to Metaverse racing, LuckyDuck Incorporated, is facing troubled times. There was some doubt whether its odds were referring to the 1500th post, or the 1500th reply, so all bets were called off and no legs were broken by pirate enforcers (this time). Also, there is no established method for transferring BCs between forum accounts. "Well, we hadn't really thought that far ahead", admitted TheQuack, "but we're in consultation with the devs right now, we'll have it working by the next race. Well, we should have a way to pawn off medals, at least." A Stardock spokesman, speaking under condition of anonymity, said "Maybe if you upgrade to Drengin.net."

---

Btw, Ray, by the end of the last posse story, wombat swapped your gold medal for his bronze one while you were drunk - if you want to add a cameo chapter there on how you got it back, you're more than welcome :-)

Actually... the events there could explain where Evil Ray came from in the first place!!! MUHAHAHA!!!

setalon,

When did you buy GalCiv? Your player number is in the 700s! Wouldn't that put you around the time of the original release? :SURPRISED:

Hi all

Finally broke 100,000. Congrats to FOTR for being #1. Happy to read about the scoring changes for the new release. Making the higher difficult levels score much higher metaverse points seems fair and invites new strategies. Also in the future anomalous scores may be visible before posting, which would be good. Ray, don't take too much time off. LOL.

Just paid my $30 for Drengin.net. I know the free XPack is due out in only a couple of weeks, but these guys deserve a little something extra. Plus, some of the other games looked pretty cool!

Sacred Scrolls of the Fellowship, page 62: Feral Hobbits besieged Fellowship Hall, causing much havok. :)

Just visiting. Haven't been around here in a while. Maybe those feral hobbits will teach you some of their kung fu if you get them drunk enough on that brandywine.
