ICONS Top Left

What do they do other than take up screen space?

I have a bunch of icons that appear on the upper left of the screen, mostly orange in colour.

If I hover over one it will say something like "Upgraded Lasers"

Clicking on them tells me a bit more like a description and something to do like 'Research the "Spectrum Amplification" technology' with a blue circle on the left and a blue arrow pointing down into a circle on the right.

Clicking either does nothing though hovering over the blue downward arrow gives me a useless hint to, in this case, right click to send the fleet to a specific location, where that location having any relevance to the "mission" might be being anyone's guess.

They are missions you got from choices you made in earlier big screen pop-ups.

The Research ones you have to research their tech and receive a bonus when done.

One of the others you must explore three planets for parts the icon to select them will be just under the planetary improvements icons.

Another you have to explore anomalies till you find the ones needed, not all the anomalies contain the resources needed.

A general UI pass is on the team radar, and definitely in order.  There's a lot of odds and ends, such as you pointed out, that could use a little love for sure..
