What are nanobots used for? Everyone wants to trade for them so I know I'm missing something.

If you get some Nanobots, they will show up in your Resources across the top of the screen.
If you hover over them, the tooltip tells you they are needed for Tech updates. That probably happens later in the game than I have played so far.

Colony upgrades. Not sure how you make them though. Click on a non core world colony and there is a way to upgrade them but you may need to unlock some tech first although I remember having the option pretty early.
