Ship Leveling

As I have played through some games I get some very powerful fleets as they level. If you up grade a ship I assume it goes back to level one. If it does, why? Realistically if you are upgrading to better weapons, defenses, drives, etc., You still would have the same crew manning them. Even if you want to say that they don't know the systems, they still know that tactics. I could see even taking a percentage loss on the level the crew has achieved, even as much as 50%. So my question is, do you loss a ship's level when upgrading, and if so why, and could it be looked into. Thanks

Ship experience and levels are retained when upgrading ships.

Never really noticed a difference with ships and leveling.

Is there a way to tell what level/xp a ship has? Also what benefits does a ship get when leveling?

In the big Details screen, under Ship Report, is the listed level.  Hovertip over that gives breakdown of present bonuses and XP to go until next level.  My little Destroyer is level 2 with 5% HP and 9 XP to the next level.  Wish it luck, there are lots of Pirates about.
