Unreasonable AI demands for peace

Hi,

In a couple of recent games I've been at war with some of the more bellicose AIs - Drengin and Snathi  last game; and I've at some stage considered negotiating a peace treaty perhaps to fight somebody else.  The AI seems to have an extraordinary sense of their own power. For instance after a long war in which both sides have lost some ships, them more than me and no planets have changed hands, I've eventually got ahead in power rating both overall and military. But they still  demand some vast amount of gold to make peace.

I presume others have experienced this and was wondering whether anybody knows how deliberate this is. I guess there must be a hidden variable somewhere.

Cheers,

Jon

Best I can tell, you have to give them a solid smackdown before they want to talk peace at any reasonable price. I've seen the Ai ask for large sums as you describe, but I've also been able to demand large sums from them.  However, the latter only occurs when I've taken 2/3 of their planets and destroyed 75% of their ships kind of thing.

The situation you describe is hardly what I'd describe as a crushing defeat scenario, so I'm not surprised the demands are still high.  From what I can tell, massive loss of power relative to you is what triggers a shift in the price of peace.

What game variables factor into it, I don't know. Diplomatic relations, other wars, personality and behaviour traits could all play a part.  But it seems totally dependent on massive power shift right now.

Reloading the game seems to help?

i had requests for peace popup several times when i loaded the game the next day.

But just in general.... unreasonable AI diplomacy is the fine tradition in 'all' strategy games. It is how the developers compensate the limitations of the AI handling diplomacy compared to an intelligent human player.

I've never had the ai agree to peace when I offer it,even if I try to bribe them while I'm not only winning but am five to ten times their power score. I usually just stop attacking their world's and only squish their fleets, eventually they offer me peace and I accept. Or I use the ufp proposal for galactic peace.
