Tip: AWACS Ships

This is probably obvious to the hardcore players here, but it was a revelation for me. I'm in a long, long, long game on an Immense map where I'm pushing back the fully developed Dread Lords. It's turn 300 and they appeared about turn 100 at a great distance from me. Although I'm steadily pushing them back, several times they've had fleets swoop in out of the FOW and kill my fleets with transports. So I made a ship called the Super Survey that is very fast and has huge sensor range (30). I send that along with a group of fleets, and when it's time to start approaching for invasions, I just park it on guard nearby, and I can see enemy fleets approaching from great distances. This has cut my loss of transports to zero. Incidentally, I'm crushing the other AIs so badly that none have dared to attack me, although most of them are furious. But the Dread Lords present a nice challenge. I really like this game.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the game. You are referring to sensor stacking. Most folks do it and there was some debate at release how this made scout ships kinda obsolete. Personally, on Insane maps I always use them. It really helps see the enemy approaching your fleets and transports as you have said.

Cheers!

It does get a bit silly do... On my last game I just ended up with a ship which had a sensor range of 150-200 units - covering the entire map when placed somewhat in the center and effectively removing the need to ever fit any ship with a sensor ever again.

I make one sensor ship with 500+ sensor range and some engines to run if necessary, park it somewhere, and I am good. I never put sensors on any other ships.

I like sensor stacking...

however...  I want them to make cloaking or sensor jamming tech that  will "hide" either whole areas in fog of war, or hide ships from sensors unless they are within x number of hexes...
