Ability to Rename Stars

Did a quick search to see if someone already requested this, and only found an old thread from the "beta" era...so I'd like to humbly request the ability to change star names! Most of the star names are ok, but I'd like to ability to edit/change some of the sillier ones.

Thanks!

its one of those things that everyone and later on Paul all wanted to have. In fact Paul already thought it was implemented in the early days which turned out to be wrong :P. It is available to do in the map editor so i think that the code base for easily implementing it is already there its just that Stardock needs to add it.

That being said, i have a vague memory of Paul saying in one of the dev streams that he wanted to do something special or game-play related with stars later and so he was holding of allowing you to rename them now simply to save him the trouble on spending time doing it now only to have to redo it later when his idea is implemented.. So maybe if we are lucky in the expansion you will be able to rename stars :P

Or you could just re-do the starnames list.

Yea? How?

There is a mod at Nexus that will reset all names to real star names.

Look in:

Program Files/steam/steamapps/common/GalCiv3/Data/English/Test   (that's not exact wording but you should be able to find your way).

There is a file 'StarNamesText. Make a copy of it (rename it something like StarNamesText_OLD) and move it elsewhere (if you leave it there the game will add it in and complain about all the duplicate names, and you might want to go back to the original one day. Also keep a copy of your edited file... everytime StarDock updates GC3 it will over-write your file.

Edit the copy to have the names you like. Boot up the game and - voila - stars named as you like.

PM me with an email address if you'd like a copy of mine - it's mostly classical names.

It's XML now.  I can work with that :P

Cheers!

We do still need the ability to rename things in-game, while in the middle of our play.  Specifically, the ability to rename:

  • Star names
  • Colony names
  • Shipyards
  • Starbases
  • Ships
  • Fleets

Most important of those, however, is Colony names and Starbases - as we tend to have dozens of them.  And not just renaming them at creation, but whenever we want to rename them.

With the exception of stars, and maybe shipyards never felt the need to change their name, everything else you listed can be renamed.

Wait, so what exactly is the benefit to renaming stars?

Nothing, really. Some people don't like the names of some of them.

Okay... I can see this being at the bottom of their priority list..., unless it is like a five minutes of coding solution. I never even pay attention to star names since there are no interactions with them whatsoever.

You can rename everything in game already that you posted.  I put up a Star Name text xml form at Nexus. It currently has 1117 star names for play.

I've had no luck trying to rename things in 1.41.  Clicking on the name field at the top of a Colony Management or Starbase Management screen does nothing.  Nor does ctrl-click, alt-click or right-click.

Not as easy to use as what you're trying, but bring up the planet map, click on Govern Colony in the lower left, and there's a Rename Colony button there.

Yep, that's the spot - and I gather it works for other things too like starbases.  I had to dig back through the forum archives to find a clue that the rename function is only available on the main (map) view and that you click on the information box in the lower left to rename things.

(It should still be added to the Planet/Starbase management screen...)

It has now been updated to 1631 system names.....

It`s about immersion. If you own a system, or even if you don`t you should be able to rename everything. You are the leader of your Faction. You own all the cartography maps so you can order everything renamed, even Alien systems (though the Aliens would not acknowledge it).

Anyway, long story short, I also agree that anything that is possible to rename, should be renamable.
