FPS issue

Hi.

Why my games (tested with the last 2 world size) I get an average of 13-25 FPS at turn 50+ aprox (including the most far away cam, with symbols only)? my graphic card should run it at 60 FPS without a problem....

I have the latest drivers for all my hardware.

* My general PC specs: Windows 10 pro 64 bits, Directx 12. AMD FX-8350 8cores@4Ghz, 16Gb ram, AMD Radeon R9 280x, SSD 840 EVO 500Gb.

Check your Prefs.ini file and see if you see anything odd in there. Or, delete it and start the game up to generate a new one. Then reconfigure your video settings and see if it continues.

Prefs.ini = OK.

Already try deleting it, but its not the configs... it's an optimization issue, because it start after 50 turns aprox (when there are lots of ships or starbases). When I press "next turn" it stutter a LOT and the FPS drops to 5 or 13. When its my turn the average is 25 FPS.

Other very demanding games work fine at max graph settings and 60 FPS (because of vsync)... I cant believe that the simplified map (far away) can't be showed at 60 FPS min. The only way to get 30-40 FPS is to zoom in at max, but I can't play like that, showing me only 1 or 2 ships.

Interesting. I've posted about a similar issue but wasn't really paying attention to my exact FPS. So I decided to check them. In the main Galaxy screen, fully zoomed out, I get 39-40 FPS and it can dip down to 31-34 FPS when I tell one of my ships to move. The ship's movement is very jerky, as if I were having low FPS, which I'm not. I think I should be getting a little higher FPS with my setup (Maximus VII Hero, i7 4790k @4.4GHz, EVGA GTX970SSC 355.82s, 32gb DDR3 2134, 1000W PS, Onboard sound, 32" Bravia XBR, Win7Pro64) but even with 30 FPS ship movement should be nice and smooth. Using different amounts of zooming gives me varying FPS, typically from 50-60 FPS. After hitting the Turn button, they would drop down to 30-32 FPS but the AI ship's movements are not as jerky as mine are! Very odd. I've also deleted my Prefs.ini and reset settings and it made no difference. Latest official nVidia drivers, along with my other hardware drivers are all up to date.

@ Avatar137 - Are you on the 1.3.1 beta opt-in?  I noticed jerky movements with my ships in 1.3, but not anymore in 1.3.1.  I don't know what the difference would be.

Your video card is significantly superior to my GTX760.  I didn't check my FPS, but didn't think it was an issue because the AI ship movements were smooth.

On the 1.3.1 opt-in, everything is smooth.

MottiKhan, Yes, I'm back on the Opt-in since the hot fix was released to it last night (1.31 was causing lots of stuck turns where 1.3 hadn't given me any yet) So I've re-opted in again last night and I was able to continue my 1.3 game that just got stuck. Long story short, I haven't had enough time with it yet to see. When I"m done with hwork I'll be play testing it some more and will update here if anything has improved. Thanks for the feedback/info!

Edit: Okay, I've had a little time to test and found that I still have it with 1.3.1.4. Start with "ideal" conditions. Fresh reboot, make sure no extra un-needed processes are running. Start the game and wait a couple of minutes after the save game is loaded to make sure all that needs/wants to be loaded is. I made a quick little video and posted it on my web site to show what I'm seeing. I find that it is less with 1.3.1.4 but it still happens and under slightly different situations. It was worst when first starting to play, almost like all the video that wants to pre-load hasn't been able to finish loading yet. The longer I played, and it was only for about 15 min. tops as I was still working and trying to grab some lunch, the less it happened. If you watch the short video. The first two ships show the stutter quite easily, the 3rd ship I move shows none at all, as if all the textures, etc. have finished loading into memory. Then I switched to a different part of the map that I haven't been to yet, this is after other ships in my initial area I started in began to all move smoothly, and the stutter was back just like when I first started the game, as if the new textures haven't loaded yet. All very odd.

Edit#2: I forgot to mention that my FPS were steadily in the 50s during this time with my CPU usage about 35% and ram was having about 15gb out of my 32gb being used. The video card was also running just fine with nothing seemingly to be over stressed. I had plenty of head room to spare. While running FRAPS I also noticed that it having capped my FPS at 30fps for the video also seemed to help with the stutter issue unless it was just coincidental as I've not run and recorded video with FRAPS in this game before.

Another thing that I did was a complete uninstallation, wipe of the old folders and reinstallation of GalCiv3.  I did that while trying to troubleshoot the stuck game thing.  I did the uninstall/reinstall with the 1.2 version and again with the 1.3v2 opt-in.

I don't know if that had any effect, but who knows?

I'm leaning toward this for your problems.  One other user, Seilor, has reported problems with AMD processor on very large maps and lots of AI ennemies.  In his case, it was long turn wait, but I'm thinking it's related.  Many games aren't optimized for AMD processors, unfortunately, and the CPU becomes a bottleneck.

You should append your support ticket and provide a save game where you are experiencing these issues.  Maybe someone over there has an AMD machine they can try your game and see what needs to be optimized specifically.

I have an AMD processor on my work machine, I could try your save game and see if I experience the same issues as you.  It's only an A-10, but if you have troubles with an FX-8350, my work machine should experience severe slowdown too.  Never had any problems with my Intel i5 at home.

Can you give us a link to your save game?  Use Dropbox or Google drive to share the file :)

The CPU is always at 40% top.. but the FPS issue is in place when it's my turn, so it's a graphic problem.

I have a Radeon 290x at home and a R7 250x at the office.  I shall see if I have the slowdowns there.  At home, zero slowdowns.  My video card may be more powerful, but not by so much it would make a difference in a non graphically intensive game such as GC3.

Anyway, I'll test it this evening and report some feedback.

I've added some extra info into my original post in this thread after doing a little more testing with 1.3.1.4 and added a video to show what I see.

Ok, tested the Ultimo save game on two computers.

#1

AMD-A8 6600k

16gb RAM DDR3

Radeon 250x

FPS: on average, 40fps.  Sometimes a little higher, often a little under, closer to 37-38fps.

As soon as I hit turn, the fps drop, and sometimes, ship movements were very jerky.

Frame rate drops below 30fps when moving around full zoom out, until they stabilize again.

#2:
Intel Core i5 4670k

16gb RAM DDR3 Corsair Dominator

Radeon 290x

FPS: on average, 60fps.  Sometimes a little higher, often a little under, closer to 37-38fps.

As soon as I hit turn, the fps drop, but ship movements remain smooth, even when zoomed out completey.

Moving around the map, I get 55-56fps, then once I stop moving it stabilizes at 60-61fps.

Memory used average 7505mb, as reported by HWinfo64.
Total CPU Usage average 37%
Max CPU/Thread: 57%

So, Intel Machine with 290x: no problem.
AMD Machine with 250x: no problem.

Since my office GPU is kinda weak (it's not meant for gaming, after all :) ), it's hard to draw conclusion.

Spent another 2+ hours playing tonight and I have to say it's really no different for me. I typically play with the main map zoomed out a couple of notches past the ship/planet rendering phase and usually have a steady 50fps. CPU usage tended to be between 20-25% with RAM being mostly around 15gb being used. The odd thing noticed this time around is it's only my ship movement during my turn that has this jerky ship movement. As redviper37 noted, my FPS also drop down to the teens or even single digits for a few sec. while the AI takes its' turn but the movement on screen remains smooth for me during the AI's turn.

I see that francogpellegrini already mentioned creating a ticket and sending the data requested by The_Gear, however, I would like to ensure we have a sufficient amount of data to resolve this. If you are experiencing this issue and have not created a ticket already, please see post #3 by The_Gear.
