Is it me or are missile boats OP

Every time I play sandbox I beeline missile tech.  Why?  Because the defender (small missile ship) has twice the fire power of its beam and rail equivalents.  Hell, it has more firepower than the medium ships-the corvette does 8 points of damage and the defender (with basic missiles) does 12.  I'm playing a normal came right now where I haven't built any medium ships (my first few large ships are entering service now and guess what weapons they have) just huge swarms of defenders (think 13 ships per fleet) that destroy pretty much everything and I have a huge lead on the other factions (strangely they're building the same harpoon boats I am but their fleets are smaller.)

The AI is pretty terrible at countering anything you do. You can probably do the same with beam tech etc. and win too, it's not a missile thing. If the AI beelined point defense, your fleet would be wrecked pretty fast.

so how come the small beam temlates offer only 6 damage per ship?

They shoot faster. Weapon damage isn't exactly balanced at the moment.

Missiles and Lazers are the clear winners, with missiles being a little bit better than lazers unless you abuse reloading then missiles are game breaking strong.

But overall it's sort of an apples and oranges comparison. They shoot at different ranges and are intended to be slower(missles than lazers). So the damage per second is supposed to be somewhat close.

Missiles are slower then lasers and with range extension tech lasers can be as long ranged as missiles but hit directly instead of having travel time.

I wish they'd actually show DPS,, especially for carriers.  Would help me decide what to build

Lasers are also more accurate than missiles.
