[Beta 4] Combat Bug?

or design feature I'm not understanding

I ordered my Terran unit to attack one of Yor's, and he proceeded to wipe the floor with me. The issue is, he has beam weapons, and it went right threw my shields like they didn't exist. I had 32 kinetic attack with 48 shields to his 27 beam attack/27 shields:

I've attached the battle log. As you can see, the Yor's beam attack penetrated my shields at full strength. So is this a bug? Is it possible that my shields were depleted because I was in a battle the previous turn and need time to recover? Is there an add-on that allows ships to fire before a crew can respond with defense?

I'm still trying to grasp the changes made from GalCiv2 to combat mechanics. But this strikes me as a bug.

Jonsarik,

Is this in beta 4 0.70.0 or beta4 patch 1  0.71.1?

0.70.  I thought I had the latest.

[Edit] I don't see anything in the changelog of yesterday's patch addressing this bug though.

I don't know of anything that addressed it either, however, I'm trying to get clarification when adding this to the list of known bugs  Thanks thoug.

To get the latest opt in patch you would need to go to steam, choose galactic civilizations III by right clicking, choose properties, then betas, drop down to opt in patch if you want.

I did update, and ran the battle again. This time I survived, but still took some heavy damage. Still trying to make sense of this.

I'm not seeing any bug.  He hit you for 27, damage absorbed by your shields (damage text in yellow).  He hit you for 27 again, damage absorbed by shields (damage text in yellow).  You fired and missed.  He hit you again and your shields were taken out by the previous 2 shots, so 27 damage done to your hull (damage text in red).  You fired at him and missed.  You fired at him again and hit for 32 damage, which apparently his shields did not mitigate, so you did 32 damage to his hull (damage text in red).  He shot you and did full damage again since your shields are already down, the full damage of the beam attack was enough to destroy you (text in red).

A quick overview of combat in GC3 in case you hadn't read about it yet.  Beams have longer range than kinetic attacks.  Thus he got off 2 shots before you even started firing.  Your defenses are depleted by damage, so once your defenses have been broken through, they are GONE.  Your shields do not absorb 48 damage from every shot, they can only absorb 48 damage total before they are gone.  So he hit you 4 times, twice before you even got in range to shoot.  The first 2 hits you took were absorbed by your shields, and took the shields down.  The second 2 hits destroyed you.

I am not one of the devs, so I can't be absolutely certain this is exactly how the coding for your battle went.  That is just my synopsis from what I have observed as a player so far.

So nope, I don't see any bugs here.

Thank you for explaining. I've been trying to look up combat mechanics with little success.

Is this how GC2 was?  I don't think I like this.  If I have a tone of shields, a beam attack should barely be able to ding me.

It's like shooting a hand gun at a tank.   No matter how many rounds you fire, you'll never knock it out.

No defenses work differently in GCIII than GCII. I think they will need to do some balancing to compensate, but that probably won't come until after beta 5.
