I must concur. More global life would be help make the world feel more alive.

Maybe the occasional rabbit loping around or a fox or deer peaking out of the woods.

Crabs on the beach or schools of fish swimming around, a whale surfacing or maybe some seabirds flying around above the ocean.

Some lizards in the desert or some antelope/mountain goats in the mountain would be nice.

I really like the birds flying around and I especially love the leaves slowing falling down on one of the combat maps. Really pretty and well done. ^^

This and more ambient sounds. I loved how nice the world of Heroes of Might and Magic II and III sounded. It was a magical place!

+1 from me too. The older Heroes of Might and Magic games had great sound design overall and the ambient map sounds really brought the map to life with a special charm you don't experience too often. I still play HoMM3 from time to time (Hooray for GOG!).

Another game with great ambient sounds on the strategic map was Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic.

Another big +1. Ambiance may seem like a relatively small thing overall but in reality it makes a massive difference in terms of overall thematic immersion. If you can find a way to further integrate the environment with the strategic circumstances it makes for an even bigger win.

I like this idea very much. More wildlife and little animations on the worldmap, as well as the tactical maps would further enhance the artstyle and provide some distinction between different terrain types.
