What is Star Control?

Never played Star Control but Stardock making a prequel got me interested. So what kinda game is Star Control? At first glance it seems like an X3 game but without 4x elements, so kinda like a space RPG? Anyone care to enlighten me?

I don't know either. If it has RTC I would play it. Or if it had some unique feature. Thanks for asking.

The franchise is mostly known because of Star Control 2. For good reason as it is an excellent and very unique game.  I would classify it as a space opera adventure game but then it is so unique that it is hard to compared it to anything.

The good news is that the authors of the game have released to source to the public, as a result the game has been ported to modern computers and is avaiable for free.  I recommend you download Ur Quand Masters HD and experience this great game by yourselves, its free!

Star Control is an amazing series of games, very rich lore, great gameplay and if you ask me I would go as far as saying its the game that probably had the most influence over the creators of Gal Civ.

The Ur-Quan are the main bad guys in the game who conquer most of the galaxy and nobody can stop them until they encounter Earth.  Humans are relatively new and low tech compared to the majority of the galaxy but they quickly adapt and hold back the Ur Quan and form an alliance with many of the other races.  Some old and powerful others young and less so but together they face of the Ur Quan and their allies (or conquered subjects)

Sound familiar -_-

Thx for info guys. I spend the whole of last night reading about the lore, like it. Now i know where the Asari from ME came from, Syreen LOL.

How about the gameplay? I currently on the train of thought its gonna be a space RPG. So like maybe a semi open world in space with you piloting your ship in first/third person and flying around doing quests and main plot till the end. No base & unit building, diplomacy, commanding fleets, creating own empire etc, basically no 4x elements?

Its not a 4x, nor would I call it a Space RPG.

Why don't you just try it? Its a 10 min download.

As others have said, Star Control 2 doesn't really restrict itself to a single genre, instead borrowing from several. It is definitely not 4X, although Star Control 1 had some memorable strategic elements. The sequel was an open world action adventure borrowing elements of RPG (searching for artifacts and lengthy dialog-driven conversation to advance the plot), shoot-em-ups (ship-to-ship combat and collecting resources on planets), puzzle solving (navigating a vast interstellar map with limited time and resources), and basic strategy (deciding how to design and outfit your primary ship and which support ships you choose to represent your fleet).

All of these elements are incorporated very loosely into a whole without a specific focus on any one in particular. This went a long way toward making it more than the sum of its parts. You have a variety of responsibilities as the captain and are not restricted to just one aspect of gameplay. I think it's a big part of what gives it the literary aspects of an epic, while at the same time having enough levity to not take itself too seriously, as many modern games in these genres seem to.

Star Control is more of a space adventure game in which humans find themselves in the middle of a galaxy wide conflict.

Specifically, Star Control is the name of the Earthling organization designed to interact with the alien powers.
