Attacking cities

How can I do this effectively?

When waging war in the midgame, how should I go about taking cities?

I frequently find myself in a situation where I've got a big army advantage, but can't really get anywhere between the "nine units in cities vs. seven in my mobile stacks" thing plus the city militia joining in the fun.  I usually have to live with capturing a city or two that's left unguarded, but even that can get painful sometimes, especially if there's a bunch of forest tiles in my way.

Many suggestions. I use two field armies. Main with sov. Secondary. If I am lucky, one of them has a road-builder in its ranks. Primary stack attacks city. Next turn, secondary stack replaces primary in city, as primary moves on to next target, or clears the area. Hope this helps
