What Are Some Good Star System Names?

I just used names of planets from Star Trek... but hey I'm a dork. You don't need to listen to me

My favorite Star System Names in no particular order:

Ehrm . . .

1. SS 20478 (note - SS stands for "Star System")
2. SS 18925
3. SS 29881
4. SS 90903

but my favorite would have to be good old . . .

SS 00001

There is a general theme here I know but feel free to fool around with it to your heart's content! Maybe you could even add letters! I don't know . . . that might be going a bit too far . . . enjoy!

this is inferior to the borg episode of star trek the next generation's "sector zero zero one".

Ah yes the Borg Dreamscape uni-matrix 001 . . . I believe it was a Voyager Episode that detailed it explicitly. Then naturaly they went and destroyed it via the script . . . (sulk)

The designations I use all have 5 digits because . . . um . . . that is optimal for my memory (phone numbers are a real problem in our collective, good thing we are linked by the hive conciousness!). We need more smilies! (pretty please)

P.S. It is a good system I think . . . Sometimes I get my Cubes and Colonies confussed but lets not fuss over that!

My all-time favorite for any civ-style game: Coruscant.
I also like to give them names of cities where my favorite beers are brewed...like Flensburg .

I've got two schemes, both alphabetical.

I'll either do a culture theme (first system is African or Argentine or something) or a random cool-sounding name (B is for Balder's Gate, etc).

I've tried cities, but the end of the alphabet kills me.

Or latin names indicating distance to homeworld like Proximus combined with "NE" for northeast sector + PQ, for example ( I always tend to get confused about the positions of some planets the longer the game takes ) .

#9 - For just that reason, I tend to name my planets things like "ACb" and "DEa" so I'll know exactly where they are (sector 0,2's second system and sector 3,4's first system, respectively). Comes in really handy in a "large" or bigger galaxy. Not nearly so important in my current "Tiny" game...
Of course, I do wish that the origin sector was in the lower left instead of the upper left.

I like to name them for the sector that they are in. That way I can always find them quickly when the game mentions them in a message. (e.g., "Due to recent beach fashion trends, planet Alpha(6-5) IV has just become a class 43 planet")

Another thing I do is to imagine the galactic map superimposed over a map of the Earth. Then I name the star systems after cities that would appear in that approximate location on the world map. This also makes it easier to find planets on a really big map.

Major Gods from lots of different pantheons are good.(Zeus already gets his "props").
Famous names; real and fictional. (Make your friends stars).
Have fun.

How about real astronomical star names? This overlaps a whole lot with the "books and games" and the "mythologies" categories.

I usually name them after famous people from history (Mainly politicians and astronomers)

I use star names from the books In Death Ground, Crusade, The Shiva Option, and Insurrection by David Weber and Steve White. I don't think there are enough in the handy warp-line maps at the back of the book for a gigantic or huge map, but there are enough for a small/medium definately. And with some searching through the pages there are plenty more.
