thoughts on a new frigate

tech spy

I have been thinking I have played many RTS games and I love Sins but I have always thought that it was missing an element and I think I figured out what it is.

a spy

so here is my thought and I am hoping that someone can point me in a direction to get started.

the Idea is a small frigate with minimal weapons capability that when with a fleet can use a special ability that when it attacks a ship or structure it can within about a minute if it survives can eventualy capture the knowledge of it and make it buildable by your own faction.

can this even be done?

the thought is there would be two additional reseaches one in the military tree for the ship and one in the diplomacy for the tech grab.

when there is tech for another ship type a new button opens in the appropriate ship type folder for stolen ship blue prints

let me know what you all think of this as a mini mod as I said it is just an idea.

Nope, tech stealing is totally impossible. I mean I guess in a very limited sense you might be able to kind of do that with abilities, but it would have to be limited to at most one or two ships per race, and you'd then have to "build" the ships not from your shipyards but from the ship that got the "blueprints".

so the ship would be a capital ship?

mind you this is all just in thought but I am open for sugestions, part of my thinking in this would be the ability to take knowledge of diffrent races orbital defence platforms not including the differing small craft structures. perhaps even reseach structures to take advantage of diffrent ship options

With what your suggesting probably would be difficult if not impossible. But your idea could be taken another way which can be done.  As in StarCraft-- you could in effect capture a targeted ship and control it for the duration of the game.  As for upgrading capabilities I doubt that.

You can only research your faction's weapon techs, not those of other races....that basically means that there would be absolutely no point in building another race's ship unless it had a really good ability....

Unfortunately, most nearly all ships really bank on their researchable ability, not the ones that come with the ship by default...the only 2 exceptions would be corvettes and overseers -- all other ships would be pretty useless...

No, I said absolutely nothing about capitalships...

Basically, you couldn't make anything generally do what you want. You could maybe make a ship that needs to "scan" a predetermined unit, say a hoshiko, and then after that the ship would be able to use another ability to spawn a hoshiko, but as you'd need a different ability for every ship, you at most could get 4 ships you could build. And not any for ships you scan, you'd need to determine which ships you want to be buidlable from the beginning. Also, the AI would never be able to use it right.

So yeah, basically you should just consider it not possible, the only way to do it is so lame it is not even worth the trouble.

ok guys thanks for the input it was just a thought

Never hurts to ask....

The only thing that would probably be realistic to scan would be planets...having a ship scan a planet could give a permanent buff to any friendly ships that ever enter that well...that would work out a lot easier, though obviously it is not at all what you were originally looking for...

AL can already takeover other types of ships, so this doesn't seem that radical to me.  Yes, it's not the exact same, but not that far off.  ;)
