Any way to defend a trade route?

It's frustrating to see my trade routes get destroyed during a war, even when I have complete military superiority over the enemy. I'd gladly assign some warships to escort those little freighters around, but I haven't found a way to do that. Anybody, anybody, ... Bueller?

Has anyone designed a "Combat Freighter" ship (like a Combat Transport)?

Have good intelligence with Eyes of the Universe and pockets of intercepters here and there along the route. If you see a threat approaching the freighter, take it out with the nearest attack ship. There is no effective way to sit on a mini-freighter. They move after everything else and unless the route is a straight line, you cannot anticipate the course very well. You just got to keep the space lanes clear with patrols that can get to the mini-freighter in time and see the threat coming far enough away to act on it.

A patrol route would be a great improvement but alas there seems no such thing as yet in GC. Mabye one day (sigh) :(

Build 2 Freighters for each route. Land one to establish it; keep the second parked adjacent. If and when the route gets discontinued due to war, immediately re-establish it with the spare freighter. (Send another spare out as necessary when this is done.)

Escorting: You can join escort vessels in the same hex with a mini-freighter into a fleet. The vessel will then move together with the mini-freighter. However, in practice this is more micro-management than it's worth.

Instead, lay out your trade routes in straight lines (or diagonals) to build +Trade SB's in each sector moved through. Bulk up these SB's with all available military improvements. Station 2-3 warships by each one to take advantage, and eliminate any Raiders sent into the sector by an enemy AI.
