Question about Area of Control

Hi everybody,

i read the beginner guide, manual and a few other threads but don't get the clue after all about the spread of Controlzone improvements.

Here a simple example:

Game is without Mods and 1.2 (just started new game today) on a small random map with 2 players. I am playing Kingdom of Gilden.

My first settlement is level one and has 49 population. I build at first the tower of dominion, which doesn't improve the control zone of a city (at least the tooltip and the Hiergamenon doesn't say something about that).

It is season 10 and suddenly the control zone growth one tile to the south. Why? And why only in one direction?

Btw: My hero has no equipment or spells which could explain the improvement of the controlzone of course.

Edit: i researched only restoration so far.

Edit2: Next round the village get to level 2 and i took town as improvement, which should give +1 control zone and --> Nothing happens, no spread of my controlzone?? ok two rounds after the decision to tranform village into town the controlzone improved one tile in every direction.

Answer to myself: The first growth was happening because i build the tower of dominion to the south! Ok i think thats the part in the beginner guide about snaking.

Ok get it sorry ^^

Also don't be thrown off if the ZoC doesn't appear to grow on the same turn as you build your +ZoC building.  The UI takes an additional turn to update.

You can, however, build on resources before the UI updates.  Then it'll force the UI to update immediately.

It's silly, but it works. o_O

Area of Control (aka Zone of Control of ZoC) is still a bit of a mystery. The UI doesn't suggest when it might expand next, nor how it might expand. You pretty much have to figure it out by playing the game, not relying on it, or building outposts.

One simple rule is that the next time the city levels up, ZoC will expand in all directions by one tile with the exception of surrounding ZoC's. Other buildings like Tower of Dominion will expand it, too, though on the next turn like mqpiffle says.
